Nokia has a tradition of delivering handsets that are designed a little different from the norm, and the Nokia X5 is the latest in this line up of quirky handsets. Part of the X Series range of phones, the Nokia X5 is designed to be noticed and get you noticed. But unique looks are not enough to make a mark on their own, the style needs to be backed up with a certain amount of substance, and we’re going to take a closer look at the X5 to see what secrets are laying beneath the square shaped body.

The square design is instantly recognisable, although the X5 is not perfectly square, measuring 74.3 x 66.4 x 16.8mm. At almost 17mm, the Nokia X5 seems to be rather chunky, but the reason for the thickness is because Nokia have included a full, four row slide-out QWERTY keyboard, for quick and easy text entry. The keys are compact, and laid out with no space between one key and the next, but each key is slightly rounded on top, to help with ensuring quick, but accurate data entry. The main display on the device is a QVGA TFT display, supporting up to 256,000 colours, measuring 2.36 inches from point to point. Directly above the screen sits the earpiece, and to one side of this is the light sensor. Common on most Nokia devices, the light sensor allows the device to automatically control the keypad backlight, determining whether the ambient lighting conditions require the keypad light to come on, or not, which is a great help with preserving battery life, by not lighting the keypad when it is not necessary. The shape of the phone means there is ample space for the main navigation controls on the phone; located directly under the main display, the central, 5-way Navi key is flanked by two soft option keys, and the call send/end keys. On the far left is a key with a home symbol on it, which accesses the main menu, whilst on the far right of the device is the dedicated music key.Music is a main feature of the Nokia X5, with the handset being marketed as a Comes With Music device in certain key markets. The X5 has good sound quality through the external loudspeakers, and also incorporates a 3.5mm audio jack, so you can listen to music with your own preferred headset. If you prefer wireless connections, the handset includes Bluetooth 2.1, with A2DP support, so you can listen to music with a stereo Bluetooth headset. There is plenty of memory available for storing music on the phone, with an internal memory capacity of 200MB, with an available memory expansion slot which allows you to increase memory capacity to 32GB using a Micro SD memory card. The Nokia X5 runs on the Symbian S60 OS, version 3.2, and the included music player is simple to navigate and just as easy to use. Music can be sorted into various playlists of your own choosing, and can also be navigated by browsing Genre, Artist and album. The handset supports a wide range of music file types, including MP3, AAC, eAAC+ and WMA. The music player is complimented with the inclusion of an FM stereo radio, with RDS support, allowing you to tune in to the latest news, sport and entertainment from your local FM radio station.

The Nokia X5 also includes a 5.0 Megapixel camera, with video record option, which captures decent quality snaps, certainly good enough for uploading to social networking sites and sharing with your friends. Messaging is also well catered for, with support for multiple email accounts included, as well as instant messaging and push email. One of the features of the X5 allows you to easily access your unread messages by simply shaking the handset. Connectivity is also strongly present on the phone, with the 3G X5 also able to connect via HSDPA and WiFi 802.11 b/g. If you are unfortunate enough to live in an area where 3G coverage isn’t available, the X5 delivers data across both GPRS and EDGE.

Overall then, the Nokia X5 is a decent enough device, with enough under the hood to make it a functional mobile phone, rather than just a weird looking one. The X5 will be available in a variety of bright colours, including Pink, Azure, Graphite Black, Yellow Green and Purple. The Nokia X5 is expected to be released during Q3 2010.

When the word Seiko is thrown around in casuall conversation, most consumers think good quartz watches. Even those that have come to recognize seiko with quality usually think in terms of the ubiquitous automatic, the 7s26. Here it is in a dejeweld version, the 7002.

While it can be agreed that the 7s family of movements are very functional, theres a economy of form that is readily apparent in the finish.

But it wasnt too long ago that if you bought a Seiko,You where getting a serious peice of horology.

I`d like to take a short step back in time, and show you some Seikos that really packed a punch. All of these save one are from my personal collection. All are heavily jeweled, most offer hand winding. For those that think of Seikos as a lower branch on the tree of horology,I offer these pictures. Unfortunately,I hav`nt listed these in eny particular order. I have removed the winding rotor in almost all examples,so as to give the reader a better look at “what makes them tick”. I will try to add what specifacations I know about the movement, but as always,if I Boo-Boo,or omit something, please feel free to correct me,or add aditional details I`m not aware of.

Let the show begin………….

Below is the Cal 5246. A high beat movement, its beating at 28,800 bph. Covered in 25 jeweles,it has a micro regulator. It can be handwound, both day and date can be quick set at the crown, and the second hand can be hacked (stoped for accurate time setting).

Below is a Cal 8306. This movement can be found in some Sealion case`s. It has been jeweled in no less than 30 areas. It can be hand wound, and the date quick sets. This is a awesome movement.

Again with the rotor removed.

Next comes my favourite of the bunch. And not just because its the most highly jeweled movement here. The Cal 5106. It Runs in 33 jewels. With its “tadpole” fine regulating device, it is chronometer grade (this was one of the first cal.`s that Seiko certed for chronometer status,I belive). It can be hand wound, facilitates accurate second hand setting. It beats at 19,800 bph, showing just a step up from 18000. Allthough the day is semi quickset, the date can be advanced by pushing the crown in. Look at the balance cock in both scans and note how accessable the hairspring is.

Here it is with the rotor removed. Note how the the hairspring is fully developed. Like a heart that beats, nineteen thousand and eight hundred times a hour.

Here is the only “Gilted” Seiko movement I`ve seen yet. The Cal 6206. Being outfitted with 26 jewels,it is nicly jeweled to say the least. Bearing a remarkable resemblance to the 6106 family of movements. It does however, have the balance cock on the oppisite side than the 6106,therfor I`m not shure what parts it shares with the famous 6105. Using the “magic lever” bidirectional winding system that is a trademark of Seiko`s enginering.

Here you can see the winding bridge, with its covered “magic lever” and the transfer wheel going to the barrel.

H

And last but not least,as this is just a very small sampling of the serious movements Seiko has made,is the Cal 5606. The 5606 is a base calibre for many higher grade movements,as if it could be improved.
Beating at 21,600,it has 23 jewels. It can be hand wound, both day and date quick set,and the second hand “hacks”. It again shows Seikos freedom of design, with a yet different style of micro regulator.

And the last picture for the evening is with the 5606`s rotor removed. Note the diafix cap jewels, and the three quarter plate assembly.

Now,if you`ve made it this far,it means that you`ve probably waited several minute for your browser to load. I thank you for reading, and hope you`ve enjoyed being able to see how adept at watchmaking Seiko really is. Please feel free to save any pictures you`de like, but if you publish them, please give me credit.

The two companies first collaborated in 2007 with ‘30 Years of Radness’, a limited edition project to celebrate SE’s 30-year anniversary. Coming to the market in 2009 was the DC x SE PK Ripper Fixed Gear, which received mixed reviews. Today, DC and SE have teamed up once again to bring you a PK Ripper Fixed Gear for 2010.

After 2 months of rigorously testing the 2010 model, we have reached a consensus on the latest PK Ripper:

In 2009 the DC x SE fixed gear collaboration captivated the fixed gear world with its appeal – and this year’s revamp is turning out to be no different. Like its predecessor, the PK Ripper for 2010 is a fixed gear bike with accents of nostalgic BMX influence. Its floval tubing, bear trap style pedals, landing gear fork, and loop tail rear end are some of the hallmarks found on the PK Ripper that were prevalent in the ’70s BMX era, including some of the earlier PK Ripper collections.

Additionally, the DC x SE PK Ripper features a number of modern components. A set of orange Velocity Chukkers, accompanied by two Vittoria Randonneur tires, add a 2010 feel to every trick comp. Its Velocity rims have a non-machine brake wall, so braking is better left for another rim. (That’s, of course, if you choose to install a brake.) Its 3-piece SE cranks house a pair of X-Pedo XCF06AC pedals, a positive upgrade to this years collaboration.

Though SE’s 2009 version had plenty of charisma, the frame scored below par for its durability – but that was last year’s model. This year, SE’s Retro 6061 Alloy Frame features welded reinforcements between the top-tube and head-tube, resulting in the ability to withstand the heavy abuse associated with BMX style riding on a fixed gear bike.

In its 2010 collaboration with DC Shoes, SE was conscious about offering consumers a comfortable ride. The DC x SE PK Ripper is offered in seven different sizes by its manufacture, ranging from 44cm to 58cm for more of an individual fit. Oury Mountain Grips, which are a favorite among us, were passed down to the 2010 fixie. A 46t alloy chain ring was paired with a 17t cog for an all around good trick/commuter ratio. But, one of the more obvious comforting futures to the bike is its saddle upgrade. The lightly padded SE Super Classic seat replaced 2009’s hard plastic one for additional forgiveness.

Its price might take some for a bit on the expensive side, retailing for $1,000. However, there are very few complete fixed gear trick bikes being produced by bicycle manufactures. If you add that to the fact that SE will only be manufacturing 1,500 DC x SE PK Ripper 2010 Fixed Gears for world-wide distribution, $1,000 can be easily justified for this piece of art.

Thin laptops-making computer stylish and efficient Good things can come in small packages and that is certainly true in the world of technology. In the present computer world the computers are not only becoming powerful, they are becoming stylish too. People want their computer to be more user-friendly, portable and attractive. So the major companies are involved in producing thinner, light weight laptops. The important among them are given below.

Apple Mac Air

The new Mac Book Air is ultrathin, ultraportable, and ultra unlike anything else. But it is more powerful with a bigger hard drive, a 4x graphics performance boost and more power for everyday tasks. Mobile computing has yet another new standard. MacBook Air is nearly as thin as your index finger. Yet it has a 13.3inch LED backlit display, a full size keyboard, and a large Multi Touch trackpad. It is incomparably portable without the ultraportable screen and keyboard compromises. The NVIDIA GeForce 9400M brings amazing, highspeed graphics to MacBook Air. With up to a 4x graphics performance boost, graphics intensive applications now run faster. Movie and video playback is now richer. Even Cover Flow flips more smoothly. MacBook Air takes full advantage of the wireless world. It has a powerful WiFi system.

Watches have become a very important symbol of status and welfare. There are people who are willing to buy replica watches so they could show their status, which in their case, though not always, can be quite doubtful.

When you buy a watch, and specifically a genuine watch, pay attention that you don’t pay a lot of money for a fake timepiece. There are special on-line shops, which sell replica watches and they admit it. When buying a genuine watch at an unknown store, pay attention to the below listed steps, tips and warning.

1. Make yourself familiar with the collections of the watch brand, the timepiece of which you wish to buy.

2. Always inspect thoroughly the watch you wish to buy. Pay attention to the inscriptions and engravings on the face and on the case back of the watch. The original watch will never have a smeared inscription on the face or an unclear engraving. Typos and letter substitutions in brand names and inscriptions (such as the ones in the above image) are also warning signs.

3. Pay attention to the functions of the watch, i.e. how the watch itself works and how the chronograph works. Most Rolex watches have a sweep second hand and many fakes will have a tick style hand; however, some real Rolex watches have a tick style hand, so know your model. Some replica watches, which have a magnifying glass (called a cyclops), may have a weak level of magnification in comparison to the genuine timepiece.

4. Pay attention to the movement of the watch. If you intent to buy a mechanical timepiece, you should try to take a look under the case back. Fake watches often have a mechanical movement, but it is generally of lower quality than the genuine movement.

TIPS

- Try to have the most recent catalogue always at hand, so you can compare the items in the store and the ones featured in the catalogue.
- Use your common sense: a watch sold at a fraction of the store price is very likely to be fake.
- Check http://www.rolex-replica-scams.com for a complete list of replica scam sites.
- For more how to identify the fake products or counterfeit from china you can visit the website: http://china-counterfeit.iofferebay.com

WARNING

- The catalogues may not always contain all the watch models the company provides. There are cases when a specific watch is not included in the catalogue.
- Beware that there are mechanical counterfeits, which have a sweeping seconds hand.
- Be careful not to misidentify an original watch. The watchmakers have produced thousands of watches and collections. There are older models which might be identified as being replicas.
- There were cases when even the watch brand has issued watches initially having a flaw, so don’t haste the decision. The manufacturer will always call the watches back, when the flaw will be discovered.
- Never buy from street vendors, only from reputable and licenced jewellers.

This is a current model Navitimer with a very rare silver dial with silver subdail and arabics combination. What appealed to me first was the cool somewhat understated dial. It did not have the same black-and-white immediate presence that calls out “I am a Navitimer, look at me!” that many of them do.

Don’t get me wrong, however, as I love the way a classic black and white Navitimer looks. I have one of those too! This new layout of the Valjoux movement with the totalizers at 3, 6 and 9 is nice, and works well for this watch, creating a more symmetrical appearance.

This new Breitling Caliber 23 no longer has a quickset date like the previous Caliber 13-based Navitimers. I’m not sure why they were unable to carry that feature over.

Accuracy is impeccable, keeping with 3 seconds a day. When the chonograph is running it slows down a bit and keeps time maybe at about 15 seconds slow a day. I’ve kept the watch running with the chrono for several days and this seems to be consistent.

Lume is great on the hands and arabics, with it lasting quite a long time, and the watch is very comfortable on the wrist, size being one small step down from ‘very big’. The bracelet is awesome as are all Breitling bracelets in my opinion.

Overall Impression

Well I’m a huge Ridley Scott fan, I am a sucker for period pieces and to say I love Gladiador isn’t enough. Like Crowe’s Maximus, Balian is reeling from the untimely death of his wife. But revenge is not Balian’s calling. As it turns out, she committed suicide, so she’s eternally damned according to the village priest. Afterwards he is told by Godfrey of Ibelin that he is his bastard son and offers him to come to the Crusades to fight. And I can bet that you already know the rest so I won’t continue to the story but to the movie in itself.

What worked in this film were obviously the cinematography, costumes and landscapes. Ridley definitely knows how to make a movie look good. Even if Ridley changed Hans Zimmer for Gregson-Williams in this movie, the music was great. And the best thing is that you don’t even notice that there were any special effects… it all looks very real. The battles were cool, and some of it was new and at least I had never seen anything like it in a movie. Another thing I liked was the message of the story, it seemed very balanced, and criticized the hypocrites and religion fanatics. The acting was superb. Even if Liam Neeson, Jeremy Irons and Edward Norton had small parts they managed to shine. Personally I loved David Thewlis’ character, the Hospitaler. Also Marton Csokas and Brendan Gleeson did a nice job as being the bad guys. Ghassan Massound did a great job as Saladin, the Muslim leader.

For my great surprise Orlando Bloom did a nice job for being his first time as a lead. Let’s face it, he had never done serious acting until this, he’s always been the quiet guy or the second mate. Another big surprise for me was that last time I saw Bloom on the big screen was as the scrawny Paris, and now he looked really different. I think he gained 20 pounds or something for this, and it definitely helped him look convincing.

Sibylla at one point in the movie says to Balian ‘You’re a knight,’ to which he replies, ‘Neither earned nor proved.’ By the end of the movie he has both proved and earned it.

Now what didn’t work was the editing I think, it was way too obvious that they cut this film to make it bearable to average audiences and to make it work as a summer flick. And that makes the movie at times feel choppy and the story lacked character development at some points.

Another thing that didn’t work for me is that the character of Eva Green, the princess of Jerusalem. It wasn’t Eva Green’s fault it was mostly the fact that we never get to know why she liked Balian or why she does many other things. The character development was the biggest flaw in the movie.

Besides, I would have liked a gorier film as the Crusades were supposed to be very violent, but then again it’s just my opinion.

I guess Kingdom of Heaven is like Blade Runner. A great movie but a bit flawed that maybe will be better received when the Director’s Cut comes out that, yes it will be an almost 4 hour movie, BUT will have all the character development.

This movie is definitely better than Troy, Alexander and King Arthur, but there’s no replacing Gladiator, at least until the Director’s Cut of KOH comes out.

In the end KOH is an entertaining movie, worth checking out. I rate the movie with 8.5 out of 10, there was room for improvement.

Oh well, maybe this movie will please Orlando fans. Even one of my girl friends that doesn’t like Orlando was almost drooling, and I almost thought this would be a safe movie to watch with girls as he looks all dirty and stuff. Unfortunately you can never have it all.

Rolex Watch Company was founded by Hans Wilsdorf. Wilsdorf was was born on March 22, 1881 in Kulmbach, Franconia (Germany). Wilsdorf’s parents died in 1893 and was placed in a boarding school by his uncle. He was a businessman with an eye for opportunity. In his late teens early 20’s he followed his interests in business, travel, and the new “bracelet watch” and in 1900 he landed himself an apprenticeship in a watch exporting firm located in La Chaux De Fonds, watchmaking “mecca” of the world.

At 24, eager to do things differently, Wilsdorf decided to set-up his own watch-making business. He worked between London and La Chaux-de-Fonds. Interestingly, Wilsdorf never claimed to be a watchmaker; until his dying day he signed all legal documents with the title “Merchant”!.
Wilsdorf & Davies was founded in 1905 in London. That year the company introduced a leather ‘briefcase’ watch which sold in large quantities in a variety of styles. Wisdorf was interested in concentrating on the new wrist-watch in an era when the pocket watch was mainstream. At the time the “wristlet” watch was viewed as “feminine” for women only. It wasn’t deemed “manly” by the major watchmakers of the world to wear a watch on ones arm. There were also many questions that were raised as to the size of any such movements. The concern was that they would have to be so small, they wouldn’t survive under normal human activity. Even if the movement was crafted well, dust and moisture would permeate it and cause problems.

Despite the early obstacles, Wilsdorf decided that the wristwatch was the way of the future. He was ahead of his time. He contracted with ‘Hermann Aegler’, based in Bienne. He obtained movements with lever escapement at a low cost. He frequently visited the workshop in biel, purchasing large quantities of movements. The movements were ideal as they were precise running and the availability of parts and materials was good. Wilsdorf set about employing watchmakers who themselves tested the movements before they were offered to the public from the London office. Hundreds of different models followed this process and it wasn’t long before it was the fashion to be seen wearing a ‘wristwatch’. Early models were produced, mainly silver with leather straps though it wasn’t long before the gold models followed along with the birth of the flexible bracelet in 1906. In 1908, the firm was amongst the leading watch merchants in the United Kingdom.

Wilsdorf had dreamt of creating a brand for his watches, something that you could look at and see immediately what it was, but rather than immortalizing his own name on the watch face as many of other Swiss greats had done he made one up. He chose the name ‘ROLEX’. He drew this name from the wording ‘Horlogerie Exquise’, (but this isn’t confirmed) it was short, catchy and pronounced the same no matter you were in the world. Little did he know that it was going to grow to become one of the most recognized brands of all time.

In 1910, official recognition was gained from the ‘Bureau Officiel’ in Bienne, further recognizing the excellence of Wilsdorf’s timepieces. It wasn’t until four years later, on July 15 1914 that the first ‘Kew A Chronometer Certificate’ was awarded after 45 days of rigorous testing at the Kew Observatory in London. These consisted of various testing positions of the watch as well as three temperatures, Inside a refrigerator, air temperature and inside a conventional oven. Wilsdorf now insisted that all his watched must undergo and pass these tests before being sold.

Due to the First World War, the British government levied a heavy import duty on the importing which amounted to approximately one third of the a watch’s value. This decision basically forced Wilsdorf to transfer the export of his watches to his office in Bienne that was opend in 1912.

Wilsdorf was creating a wide variety of the highest quality watches for men and women alike in a choice of sizes and styles. Recognition would be required from the observatories and as well as ensuring the highest precision, the lasting protection from dust, dirt and moisture would be paramount. On June 14 1925, the first ‘Kew A certificate’ was awarded to a ladies model, being much smaller in diameter, just some (13mm) as opposed to the gents model (25mm). In 1925, Wilsdorf spent 100,000 Francs into advertisements based in UK news periodicals touting the quality of his watches and assisting him in strengthening the Rolex brand.

In 1926 the next generation of Rolex was born, the ‘Rolex Oyster’. Wilsdorf came up with the name during the design of the watch. He was hosting a dinner party and having a particularly hard time getting into an oyster. He made a comment to his guests that he hoped his new design of watch would prove to be as resilient as the mollusk. The name was born. This was a watch that would be totally watertight whilst still continuing to offer precision. The Oyster was put through it’s paces on 7 October 1927 when Mercedes Gleitze, an English typist swam the channel wearing an ‘Oyster’. She emerged from her fifteen hour ordeal with the watch functioning perfectly (much to the amazement of the public). On 24 November 1927, Wilsdorf spent 40000 Francs on a title page advert for the Daily Mail newspaper, making the ‘Oyster’ famous overnight. The watches were displayed prominently in jewelers shop windows, inside a fish tank totally submersed in water; a powerful image that would make the Rolex brand name unforgettable.

Rolex had invented a new type of unbreakable synthetic material which would be used in place of glass on the watch face and with it’s new sealing method, provide a watertight seal on the case itself. Later in 1926, the invention of a watertight winding mechanism was introduced, acting like a ‘mini submarine hatch’ it allowed the wearer to manually wind or adjust their watch when opened and when closed it would be 100% water resistant. When the crown was tightened, two smooth metal surfaces would come together causing the connection between winder and movement to completely close.

Wilsdorf’s next triumph came about in 1931, the invention of a self winding watch that powered itself on the movement of the wearers arm commonly known nowadays as the ‘Perpetual’, this was manufactured in three sizes, men’s, women’s and midsize. The ‘Rotor’ that sat on the movement swung in either direction, charging the watch at only the sleightest movement. A mechanism was also introduced to ensure that overwinding became a thing of the past. So, in the space of 30 years, Wilsdorf had invented not only the first truly waterproof wristwatch but also one that relied on just the simple movement of the watch to power itself.

In 1945, Rolex received their 50,000th certificate from the official testing office in Bienne. Later this year saw the birth of the ‘Datejust’ the first wristwatch to show the date, magnified two and a half times by a cyclops lens. Rolex were now employing over 1100 staff in both their Geneva and Biel offices and were spread amongst five buildings in Geneva alone. 1954 saw the introduction of the first ladies ‘Oyster Perpetual’ whilst two years later in 1956, the gents ‘Day-Date’ model was born, this allowed the wearer to view both the day and date whilst still enjoying every other promise Rolex had given. The ‘Day-Date’ is now available in 26 languages worldwide. Sadly, Hans Wilsdorf passed away on 6 July 1960 leaving the running of the company to the various appointees that were stated in the ‘Hans Wilsdorf Foundation’. This foundation also funded various educational projects such as a watch making school based in Geneva.

In 1971 the ‘Oyster Perpetual Sea Dweller 2000′ was brought about. This watch was water resistant to 610m (2000f). It was the first watch of it’s kind to incorporate a helium gas release valve, this was used to dispense helium during decompression.

1980 saw the introduction of the ‘Sea Dweller 4000′, allowing divers more freedom of depth, upto 1220m (4000f).

By 1985, more than 4.1 million movements had been awarded the official ‘Chronometer’ title. Amazingly Rolex watches only make up about 1% of the total Swiss watch production.

Italo Fontana created the original U-Boat watches as a designer. The watches were mostly regarded as fashion accessories rather then high-end watches thanks to the use of Japanese quartz movements and K1 mineral crystals. Today, the company and their timepieces have evolved. While one of their most appealing aspects is still their look, this aspect is backed by all the features of high-end watch production, including modified mechanical ETA movements, sapphire crystals, hand-made straps, and sturdy well designed cases. I can attest to the quality of today’s U-Boat models, and will demonstrate it by examining U-Boat’s Classico series.

The stainless steel Classico watches are probably the best selling U-Boats. They capture the essence of the company’s popular style with the bold military-inspired design, wide dial, and a metal plate affixed to the strap. Looking past the styling a watch enthusiast will also find many high quality features. One feature that stands out to me is the crown. The screw-down protective crown cover works well and looks great, but the actual crown itself is even more impressive. It is quite large and easy to handle. A sturdy and decisive click is felt when moving through the crown’s three positions. Finally, the crown feels as rock solid at the third (date) position as it does when tucked into its first (winding) position.

The recently redesigned straps are fantastic. They are now all hand made in Italy using a wide assortment of materials. They have become more supple, and a lining of soft calfskin leather adds to the comfort. The strap benefits from a ‘deployant’ folding clasp, which requires a lot less effort to use then its pressure locking counterpart.

The way a watch feels on and off the wrist is a great indication of quality. Operating the crown and crown cap is smooth and solid. The case incorporates a thick sapphire crystal, and offers a water resistance rating of 100 meter. It is thick and well assembled. I am confident that any one who picks up a current U-Boat model will be convinced of the company’s grasp on high-end horology.
