Even if you don’t consider yourself a total tree hugger, there are lots of good reasons to go organic. Your own health is one of them. And even if you don’t believe in global warming or whatever, there’s abundant evidence that the chemicals we use on plants during the farming process directly affect the environment and everything in it, including us!

When you go organic, you can start small. Not everyone has the budget or inclination to buy everything organic all the time, and that’s okay. Despite what you may think about this huge world, your individual choices as a consumer to make a difference! Every dollar you choose to spend on organic produce is a dollar that goes toward bettering organic farms and not towards traditional agricultural practices.

Okay, so you may not be convinced yet. If not, here are just five reasons to go organic.

1. Organic Has More Nutrition

Organic produce, according to a 2009 presentation at Ecofarm, has more nutrition than food that produced using manmade chemicals. In fact, www.organic-center.org notes that over 75 studies have shown that organics have superior nutritional content when compared with conventionally-grown produce. An article published in Organic Processing Magazine says that scientists speculate soil is the answer behind this interesting phenomenon. Organic farming doesn’t deplete the soil of nutrients, so more nutrition gets into your food!

If you really want the best vitamin boost from your foods, though, you should go organic and local at the same time. Locally produced foods that aren’t trucked in from across the country are fresh from the farm to your table. Since the fruits and veggies haven’t been off the vine or out of the ground for very long, they’ve lost less of their vitamin content. Vitamins and minerals are very fragile and can deteriorate quickly, so organic, locally grown food will pack more nutritional punch than their conventionally grown counterparts.

2. Organic Doesn’t Steal Nutrition

Some new studies are starting to show that when your body has a higher toxic load, which can definitely happen when you take in too many chemicals from conventionally grown produce, it’s going to take in less nutrition. In fact, the EPA warns that children, in particular, can have nutrients “stolen” by pesticides. They may also have trouble getting rid of the toxins in their bodies, which further compounds the problem.

3. Better for Your Kids

Infants – even in utero – are already exposed to hundreds of chemicals through the air and food a mother takes in. Breastmilk also soaks in these chemicals. Even though it’s a better option for giving babies nutrients, it can have a heavy toxic load, too. Children are more susceptible to the effects of harmful chemicals and pesticides. According to the EPA, carcinogens found in pesticides are about 10 times as potent for babies as for adults, and sometimes that number bumps up to 65%! Babies, children, and pregnant women should definitely focus on avoiding these chemicals by going organic. Plus, of course, they’ll benefit from the higher nutritional content of these fruits and veggies.

4. Support Better Farming Practices

The truth is that organic farms can be quite productive using older models of farming and methods of weed and pest control. In fact, over the long haul, organic farms are more productive because they don’t drain the soil of nutrients, ruining it for future crops. Using crop rotation and co-planting allows organic farmers to make more use of the resources they do have, so that they can produce a lot of variety on a little bit of land. Compared to conventional farmers with their acres of sprayed corn, soybeans, and tomatoes, these farming practices utilize resources more effectively and are all-around better for the environment both short and long term.

5. Organic Tastes Better!

One thing many people don’t realize about organic food is that it tastes better. One study by Dr. Richard C. Theuer notes that organic produce is usually juicier and better tasting than conventionally-grown food, especially when it comes to apples! Crisp apples, juicy oranges, and delectable grapes are the organic type!

Again, here you can get even better taste if you go both local and organic. Local produce has come straight from the farm, so it will have the freshest, truest flavor. Plus, conventional farmers tend to just grow a few varieties – some of which were actually bred not to taste better but to look good in the grocery store and to be compatible with certain artificial chemicals used during the farming process! Organic farmers, on the other hand, are more likely to use hardy heirloom varieties, which can expose you to a whole new world of subtle, complex, wonderful flavors!

i got this healthy way fat lose weight on self growth and found that it would be useful for you readers, so read this articles :

Many women want to be slim. Maybe you’re one of them. Perhaps you’re getting married soon and you want to fit intoyour wedding gown comfortably. Or perhaps you simply want to look (and feel) great in a swimsuit or bikini. Maybe you’ve just had a baby and want to get your pre-pregnancy figure back. Whatever your reason for wanting to be slim, there are some things you can do to become slim while staying healthy. If you are reading this article, chances are you want to know what those things are. Read on then, to find out. First thing is to assess your current eating habits. This is
important because you need to know what’s not working. If your current eating habits are keeping you overweight, and you want to be slim, it figures that you need to change those eating habits. If something is not working, change it.

Assessing your current eating habits.
=====================================
Keep a record of your eating habits for a week. The record should contain the following information:
.	What you are eating
.	How much you’re eating
.	When you eat (note the times) – you want to know
how far apart your meals and snacks are.
.	Why you’re eating at those times – is it because
you’re hungry, or are you ‘comfort eating’?
.	How you feel after eating – pleasantly satisfied
or bloated and stuffed.
.	How many glasses of water you drink each day

When you find out your current eating habits, you’ll need to determine which habits are sabotaging your efforts to lose weight. Those are the ones you want to change. More on that later.

Goal Setting
============
Determine what your weight goal is. Or you may prefer to monitor your progress in terms of your waistline or hip measurements. Whichever one suits you is best. Form a mental picture of yourself looking the way you want to look. Goals are more powerful and empowering when we visualize them. Hold that mental picture in your mind at all times.

NOTE: Eating healthily is not all there is to getting slim. You must become more physically active (read ‘exercise’) in
addition to eating properly if you’re to lose weight permanently. This article deals with the healthy eating part of that equation.

Action Plan
===========
Now that you know what your ideal size is, you have a goal that you’re working towards. You need to then determine a plan of action to help you achieve that goal.

To help you decide on the right plan, bear in mind that eating should be a pleasure. Ask yourself the following questions:

.	Which nutritious foods do I enjoy eating ?
.	How soon after eating do I get hungry again? Most adults
get hungry about 3 to 4 hours after eating a meal.
.	Do I eat only when I’m hungry? Hint: You should.
.	How can I stay full? Drink lots of water. Scientists
recommend between 6 and 8 glasses of water daily.
Your body needs it, and it helps you stay full.

With the answers to those questions in mind, form an action plan, and start a new daily record to help you keep track of your progress. This new record should contain the same columns as your initial current habits record. This way you can monitor each improvement and celebrate accordingly.

When deciding on which actions to take, you need to refer back to your initial assessment of your current eating habits. Decide which habits are preventing you from losing weight. Write down alternative habits that you want to cultivate, which will help you get slim.

These new habits you want to form are now your ‘targets’ – milestones on your way to your ideal body shape and size.

Taking Action
=============
To form healthy eating habits, start with small changes.

Don’t make too many changes at once. Set yourself main targets, such as ‘I will drink 8 glasses of water each day’, then set smaller targets to help you reach each main target. Using the example above, a small target could be ‘I will drink an extra glass of water after each meal’. When you break down your targets, they don’t seem so daunting. They seem easily achievable, so you feel encouraged to stick to them.

Decide on the foods you will be eating regularly. Make sure they’re foods you enjoy.

Eat small portions, about 5 or 6 times each day, instead of three large meals. This helps keep your metabolic rate high, and helps you lose weight naturally.

How to stay motivated to continue eating healthily
==================================================

1.	Believe that you can do it, and accept responsibility for your health and for the way your body looks.

2.	Reward yourself each time you successfully complete a small target. Celebrate each small success – don’t wait until you’ve lost tons of weight before you reward yourself. Make the journey enjoyable by treating yourself each time you make progress.

3.	Keep in mind what you hope to achieve – remind yourself of how lovely and healthy your body is becoming each day as a result of your new eating habits. Remember, each small step in the right direction is bringing you closer to your main target.

With a clear goal in mind, a feasible action plan and tips to help you stay motivated, you should find it easy to form habits that keep you slim and healthy at the same time.

Here’s to your new healthy eating habits!

Senior citizens are living longer than ever before but unfortunately a longer life doesn’t mean a happier one. Because of the advances of medical science our bodies are living longer than ever before in the history of the world but our brains are not keeping up. More and more senior citizens are becoming victims of dementia.

Alzheimer’s disease, just one form of dementia, robs the victim of their independence, memories and eventually themselves. The good news is that there are many ways that you can prevent or delay the onset of dementia. The most reliable is also the most affordable; physical activity.

By engaging in regular physical activity you can improve your balance. Good balance is critical if you want to avoid fall related accidents which can cause brain damage, leading to cognitive impairment. Many falls come from weakened muscles and bones, two things that exercise can help strengthen. When you engage in rigorous exercise you build muscle mass, improve your stamina and energy level and increase your bone density.

The biggest contribution that exercise makes brain health isn’t improve cardiovascular system. When your heart is more efficient in your lungs work better they can feed your brain better. Just 30 minutes of rigorous walking every other day can have a tremendous impact on your long term health.

Now, before you start any kind of physical fitness program you should always check with your doctor. This is especially true for senior citizens or any individual who has been inactive over a long period of time. Assuming that you get the go-ahead from your physician, here’s how you can start getting physical;

Walk. Lace up those sneakers and hit the streets. Find a buddy to walk with you to keep your interest up and to make it safer. You should never walk at night when the chances of being hit by a car we’re getting mugged increase.

Stretch. Sign-up for a yoga class or by a stretching video that you can follow along with at home. Stretching is fantastic. It will help you improve your flexibility and reduce the chances of serious injury should you fall.

Get physical. Sitting around watching TV and reading may be entertaining but they do very little for your long-term health. Take up some fun and exciting activities that will get you out of the house and introduce you to new people and experiences while giving you some physical benefits as well. Gardening, dancing, golf, hiking and bicycling are great ways for you to have more fun and get healthier too.

Sometimes it can be difficult watching your active and cherished dog suffer from fever and there is no better thing to do than to take quick steps to help it overcome its sickness.

Another thing you should beware of is that giving your dog fever treatment when you “suspect” it has fever can be really dangerous. Don’t do anything based on what you think or suspect but try to make sure you’re so certain that your dog is actually suffering from fever before you treat it. Below are some tips to help treat your dog’s fever.

Give Your Dog a Warm Bath

The first thing to do when your dog is having fever is to bath it with moderately warm water. You should make sure the water is not too warm so that it doesn’t make your dog too hot and that the water is not too cold so that it doesn’t make your dog shiver.

After giving your dog a warm bath you should take him/her out of the bath tube and place him/her on a towel and dry its body completely. This will avoid the dog suffering from cold while the remaining water droplets on the dog’s fur will do the job of cooling its temperature.

Once you’ve done the above you should take your wash rag and deep it into cool water; squeeze the water from the rag and place it on the tummy of your dog in order to maintain its calmness, keep doing this anytime the rag becomes warm till you can get a vet for it.

Avoid Giving Your Dog Human Medications

You surely love your dog but giving it human medications won’t reduce but rather complicate its problems. The drugs we humans use can be very dangerous to dogs so make sure you don’t give it any drugs but rather take it to a vet.

You’re not a vet or someone who studies anything related to animal health and don’t think that because something worked for you when you were sick it will also work for your dog – dogs are not human and some of the things that helps humans the best can be very dangerous to them.

Call a Vet

This is probably the best thing you can do for your dog if it has a fever so instead of trying to give it different sets of medications you might want to call a vet whose work it is to take care of situations like this. By so doing your dog will be in great hands and will experience a quick recovery than it can get by you treating it.

One of the patients on the seven year trial, Heidi Morter, 40, was planning her funeral after the cancer spread to her lungs and liver from her kidneys, before being offered the drug.

A little over a month into 2010 many of the resolutions that you made in January probably has fallen by the wayside. When the ball dropped on New Years Eve you might have resolved to go to the gym more often or to eat less fast food on, now, in February those promises seem as stale as the fruit cake in the back of your refrigerator. You might be feeling that you still want to change a few things this year but your earlier resolutions didn’t work out; below you will find 10 tips to bring a positive change to your life in 2010:

1.) Make room for mini meditations through out your day, close the door at your office, hold your calls, and just relax for five minutes. Hubert Benson, the co-founder of Harvard’s Benson-Henry Institute for Mind/Body Medicine, recommends doing this a few times throughout the day. It allows you to turn everything off and recharge.2.) With states increasing cigarette taxes and cities banning smoking in bars and restaurants there has never been a better time to quit smoking. Many employers, faith groups, and even some local governments offer resources to help you stop smoking for good.

3.) Make an effort to have a social life. Getting bogged down in the stresses of daily life is easy to do. Make a promise to yourself to hang out with your friends at least once a week.

4.) Be aware of your health. Get a physical this year, even if you had one last year you need to make it an annual event. Being proactive is the best way to maintain a healthy life.

5.) Stay positive. It sounds simple, but if you try and keep a positive outlook on life you will find that you enjoy your work, family, and life in general a lot more.

6.) Cut the calories back. This year instead of trying the next fad diet resolve to simply cut back your calorie intake.

7.) Exercise daily. That doesn’t mean become a gym rat it means incorporate some kind of physical activity into your daily routine. It could be something as simple as going for a walk through the park every day, or going for daily bike rides.

8.) Make “wellness” a verb. Don’t think of health and wellness as something to reach for, or something to achieve. Think of as the way you live your life.

9.) Cut back the caffeine. Instead of drinking a pot of regular coffee every morning switch to a 50/50 coffee or caffeine free soft drinks.

10.) Add a little “green” to your life. Mom really was right growing up, be sure to add fruits and vegetables to your meals every day.

These changes, for the most part, are easy to work into your daily life and maintain all year long.

Despite all the fad diets and the strange theories about eating one type of food until you turn into it, there is some actual science behind diets. Protein and vitamins are well known. Much less known are vital trace elements, the body’s equivalent of the pool pump, which provides the resources to maintain the body and replenishes the nerves and organs. These elements

Trace elements basics

Trace elements are mineral compounds. In the early 1800s Dr. Schuessler coined the word “biochemistry”, and developed a therapeutic system of treatment based on “biochemical salts”.

There are 12 naturally occurring body salts which have multiple functions in the body. These salts are a good illustration of the role of mineral trace elements.

The original biochemical salts were:

Iron phosphate

Sodium sulphate

Sodium phosphate

Sodium chloride

Potassium chloride

Potassium sulphate

Magnesium phosphate

Calcium phosphate

Calcium sulphate

Potassium phosphate

Silica

Calcium Fluoride

From this Schuessler developed a range of therapies which also treated symptoms. Iron phosphate, for example, has about 125 uses in therapy for various conditions. It’s an oxygen carrier, anti-inflammatory, and used in endless roles. The others, both individually and in combination, are used for everything from menstrual problems to depression and headaches.

The basis of the therapy is that these are the chemicals the body needs to deal with issues. In modern terminology, these chemicals in their non-compound forms are called electrolytes, and are well known in sports medicine.

Most of these minerals and many others are available in their raw forms from food. The body synthesizes them from whatever’s eaten. The problem is that the modern diet is generally unbalanced. Vital chemicals like sodium are oversupplied, but lack the important other minerals needed to make the compounds. Depending on the person, sodium on its own may be exactly what the person eating it doesn’t need, too.

All trace elements have important roles. These are just a few:

Copper- Respiration, energy production, maintenance of nervous system myelin sheath, collagen and elastin production, vascular health

Selenium- Immune system, anti- degenerative diseases, anti-inflammatory, anti-cardiovascular disease

Zinc- Immune system, skin, wound healing, memory, male libido, female fertility

Deficiencies in the trace elements are directly linked to many preventable medical conditions which are really a result of diet problems. Some deficiencies are quite serious and even bizarre. A zinc deficiency can lead to loss of taste and smell.

The trace elements at work

The trace elements don’t operate alone. They work with proteins, vitamins, and water to operate at a cellular level. The body operates a very complex range of chemical functions, and science is only now starting to realize how complex the processes are.

Your diet should contain enough green leafy vegetables and fruit to supply the right amount of trace elements. Supplements are available at pharmacies, and you can also research the natural sources of trace elements. You’ll find you’re eating a lot of delicious food, but you have to stay healthy somehow, right?

Surviving a heart attack can kill your sex life. But it doesn’t have to, and a new study shows doctors play a key role in whether it does. Patients were less likely to resume having sex if their doctors did not talk about when it was safe, the study found. Many heart attack survivors fear that a tryst could land them back in the hospital – or even in the graveyard. But the chance of that is extremely small, doctors say.

“People perceive it might kill them. And it’s not just the person with the heart attack, but also their partner,” said Dr. Stacy Tessler Lindau, a gynecologist and sexuality researcher at the University of Chicago.“If you can walk up two flights of stairs or do moderate exercise, then it’s OK to have sex,” she said.

Lindau led the study, the largest ever on this topic, and was to present results Friday at an American Heart Association conference in Washington. It involved 1,184 male and 576 female heart attack survivors taking part in a bigger nationwide study, funded by the federal government. The average age was 60. Less than half the men and only about a third of the women said advice about resuming sex was part of the instructions they got when leaving the hospital. Even fewer had that talk with their doctors over the next year. One year after their heart attacks, more than two-thirds of the men and 40 percent of the women reported some sexual activity. They were 30 percent to 40 percent more likely to be having sex if they had talked with a doctor about it.

Men were more likely to be sexually active and married before the heart attack, and to maintain their sex life after it. Some people actually reported more sex after their heart attacks, but this was the exception rather than the rule, Lindau said. A heart attack should not keep people from enjoying sex, said Dr. Edward Havranek, a cardiologist at Denver Health Medical Center and leader of the Heart Association conference. “The risk of having a heart attack during sex is really, really low,” he said. “The amount of actual physical exertion people have during sex is actually lower than one might think. It’s not as demanding as shoveling snow.”

Doctors say it is safe to resume sex as soon as the patient feels better and can handle moderate exercise. Chest pain during sex means you should stop and consult a doctor, Lindau said. Depression and mood swings are common after a heart attack and can dampen interest in sex, but this usually goes away within three months, says advice from the Heart Association. It has these tips for resuming sex:

-Prepare by improving your physical condition and personal hygiene.

-Choose a time when you’re rested, relaxed and free from daily stress.

-Wait one to three hours after eating a full meal.

-Pick a familiar, peaceful setting that’s free from interruptions.

The stressful effects of a faltering economy, skyrocketing unemployment and precarious personal finances can be dire. People take up smoking or use alcohol to cope, they become depressed or suicidal, and they develop stress-related illnesses like heart disease. Now researchers report that the harm may be spreading to children too, when parents’ stress leads them to inadvertently injure their children.

Presenting May 1 at the Pediatric Academic Societies annual meeting in Vancouver, a team of researchers led by child-abuse expert Dr. Rachel Berger at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh reported a significant increase in cases of shaken-baby syndrome, in which youngsters are shaken violently by an adult, since the start of the current recession. Researchers analyzed data on 512 cases of head trauma in the children’s centers of four hospitals (in Pittsburgh, Pa.; Cincinnati, Ohio; Columbus, Ohio; and Seattle) and found that the number of cases had increased to 9.3 per month as of Dec. 1, 2007, compared with 6 per month prior to that date — a rate that had held steady since 2004.

The rise in shaken-baby cases correlates with the economic downturn associated with the recession. “This is a perfect storm in a bad way, where we have economic stressors that are causing the removal of social-service resources for preventing and addressing child abuse,” says Berger. Although she says she was not surprised by the association observed in her study, she calls the sheer rise in recent cases of abusive head injuries in children “striking.”

Berger cautions that her study highlights an association, not a cause-and-effect relationship, between the recession and incidence of shaken babies. But the findings are a stark reminder that any stressful circumstance — family tragedy, natural disaster or financial downturn — may push parents to the limits of their coping abilities. In 1999, following a devastating hurricane that hit regions of eastern North Carolina, researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill found that in the six months post-hurricane, the rate of brain injuries caused by child abuse jumped fivefold from the rate before the disaster. In unaffected regions of the state, there was no such rise in cases.

Most cases of shaken-baby syndrome and head injuries to young children occur when frustrated parents shake their children in an effort to quiet their crying or stop tantrums. The force of the motion causes the child’s brain to shift violently in the skull, crushing blood vessels and damaging still developing tissue. It is a desperate act, one that tends to surface as a knee-jerk response by a stressed parent.

Even a few seconds of violent shaking can have serious long-term consequences for a child’s development. Shaking has been linked to learning disabilities, visual and hearing problems, seizures, behavior disorders and even death. In Berger’s study, 63% of the children, ages nine months to six years, were hurt severely enough to require hospitalization, and 16% died.

There is no official central registry of shaken-baby statistics in the U.S., but the National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome (NCSBS) estimates that each year about 1,200 to 1,400 babies die or suffer injury from being shaken, according to Amy Wicks, spokeswoman for the nonprofit advocacy group. The abuse leaves most children with serious damage: of the 75% who survive their episodes, 80% suffer from permanent disabilities ranging from mental retardation to undeveloped motor skills.

Since parental stress is the primary reported cause for shaken-baby syndrome, it is not surprising to see cases rise in tandem with a worsening economy. Researchers report that an increase in child abuse is being seen around the country in more and more hospitals. “In my own anecdotal experience at Children’s Hospital in Oakland, Calif., there is no question that the incidence of physical-abuse rates have been going up over the last couple years, and it seems to be mirroring the economy,” says Dr. James Crawford-Jakubiak, medical director of the Center for Child Protection at Children’s Hospital and Research Center Oakland.

Since the recession began, the NCSBS has received more reports of shaken-baby syndrome from hospitals like Crawford-Jakubiak’s as well as from prosecutors who are called by emergency-room physicians to investigate suspected abuse cases. “This report [by Berger] verifies what we’ve been hearing for some time now,” says Wicks.

Berger says the findings also serve to highlight the risks of cutting back on social services provided by cities when economic times get tough; these services can help parents cope with their stress and prevent child abuse from occurring.

That the number of cases of shaken-baby syndrome is rising is particularly worrisome, Berger says, because it is among the most violent forms of child abuse and therefore one of the few types of abuse that is seen and tracked by hospitals. Much abuse of children goes unreported, and such cases may be increasing as joblessness and the recession drag on. Parents must be mindful that stress, whether personal or societal, can strain their ability to cope, especially with their families. “We as adults need to recognize how stress affects us,” says Crawford-Jakubiak, “and make sure that the stresses in our lives don’t get dumped onto our children.”

The seeds of Nigella sativa Linn. (Ranunculaceae), commonly known as black seed or black cumin, are used in folk (herbal) medicine all over the world for the treatment and prevention of a number of diseases and conditions that include asthma, diarrhoea and dyslipidaemia. This article reviews the main reports of the pharmacological and toxicological properties of N. sativa and its constituents. The seeds contain both fixed and essential oils, proteins, alkaloids and saponin. Much of the biological activity of the seeds has been shown to be due to thymoquinone, the major component of the essential oil, but which is also present in the fi ed oil. The pharmacological actions of the crude extracts of the seeds (and some of its active constituents, e.g. volatile oil and thymoquinone) that have been reported include protection against nephrotoxicity and hepatotoxicity induced by either disease or chemicals. The seeds/oil have antiinflammatory, analgesic, antipyretic, antimicrobial and antineoplastic activity. The oil decreases blood pressure and increases respiration. Treatment of rats with the seed extract for up to 12 weeks has been reported to induce changes in the haemogram that include an increase in both the packed cell volume (PCV) and haemoglobin (Hb), and a decrease in plasma concentrations of cholesterol, triglycerides and glucose. The seeds are characterized by a very low degree of toxicity. Two cases of contact dermatitis in two individuals have been reported following topical use. Administration of either the seed extract or its oil has been shown not to induce significant adverse effects on liver or kidney functions. It would appear that the beneficial effects of the use of the seeds and thymoquinone might be related to their cytoprotective and antioxidant actions, and to their effect on some mediators of inflammation.
