Samsung Galaxy SIII review

Friday, May 4th, 2012

There’s something so refreshing about seeing such fervour about a phone that’s not prefaced with an ‘i’ – so it’s almost an honour to be one of the first publications to get a proper hands on with the Samsung Galaxy S3. While the Korean firm has been subject to the same clamour for information as Apple, which will have pleased the now-largest smartphone maker after years as an also-ran in the mobile phones space, it’s not been in the same league as the Cupertino lot when it comes to secrecy.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 has been snapped multiple times in leaks – some more accurate than others, it has to be said – and the specs mooted have turned out to be pretty bang on.

But that doesn’t matter – megapixels and gigabytes don’t mean anything if they’re not wrapped up in a decent package, so is the Samsung Galaxy S3 a worthy successor to the much-loved Galaxy S2?

Design

The Samsung Galaxy S3 is, according to Samsung anyway, ‘inspired by nature – it sees, listens, responds, and allows you to share the greatest moments’.

While this is all a little hyperbolic, the nature theme is certainly present when you handle the phone for the first time. Brushed plastic – you’ve got a choice of ‘Marble White’ and ‘Pebble Blue’ – adorns the large device, which runs in with dimensions of 136.6 x 70.6 x 8.6mm, despite still having to pack in a 4.8-inch Super AMOLED HD screen. Alienware Andromeda X51: An Affordable Solution for Gamers

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2012

Portability is an issue that most gamers face. When buying gaming equipment, it is a tough decision between the highly capable desktops and little less capable but mobile laptops. For a long time, gamers on the move, especially those who attend gaming conventions and tournaments, have preferred laptops. But the rise in the popularity of plasma TVs has meant that all that gamers require is a capable unit that has the right processor, memory and the controls. It has been a long and hard fought battle between the leading gaming console manufacturers. However, the pioneers in the gaming industry, Alienware, have come up with an excellent solution: The Andromeda X51.

Portability is not an issue

The Andromeda X51 is extremely portable. It stands at the height of an average gaming console. It can be easily carried around under an arm. Although most gamers do not like lugging their equipment from one LAN party to another, they are left with no other option. The so-called gaming laptops are ridiculously expensive and yet, they do not give you the gaming experience that you are looking for. That can only be provided with a PC.

With the X51, you have an excellent solution. When you go to your next LAN party with your new X51, all you have to bear with are three objects, your display, the X51 and a bag which contains the power cords and controllers such as keyboard and mouse.

Affordable

The starting price of the X51 is $700. This is the basic model with the minimum specifications. But do not be fooled by the entry level tag. It is as good as you can get at this price range, and supports most of the normal graphics games that are available in the market today. Alienware offers you a solution if you are willing to spend a little extra. Customization is available where you can beef up your RAM, memory space and graphics requirements.

Specifications

The $1000 model has a few extra features. For a grand, you get a 3Ghz core i5 processor, 1TB of hard disk space at 7200rpm, 8GB of RAM, slot loading DVD player and NVIDIA GTX 555 graphics card with dual outputs.

You have numerous ports that are typically required by a gaming PC. In the front, you have 2 USB 2.0 ports and the audio jacks for the headphone and mic. At the back, you have 4 USB 2.0 ports, 2 USB 3.0 ports, Ethernet port, HDMI, SPDIF TOSLINK and co-axial ports. On the graphics card,      you have a dual DVI and a mini-HDMI port. If you are a gamer, then you will be pretty satisfied with these specs, especially considering that this piece of equipment set you back by a grand and you can carry this under your arm anywhere you want.

Some cons

The expansion options are pretty limited; you cannot go for a super high end configuration even if you are willing to pay for it. The power brick is very bulky, almost the size of a grown man’s shoe. If you have any physical issues, replacing the video card is tricky.

Chargers of Future: Wireless and Fabric Charging

Saturday, April 7th, 2012

Long battery life is one of the most important things in the modern phones since none of us wants to charge their devices too often. There are many tips to increase battery life in phones, but they don’t give the expected results – whatever we do, our phones last for a day or two maximum. So any tips are useless here – if we want really long-lasting phones, they should come with brand new type of batteries and chargers.

Some companies are already trying to implement revolutionarytechnologies in their upcoming phones, and below we’ll try to introduce you two of them.

Fabric Charging

According to BBC, a new and revolutionary kind of fabric is now being developed: it’s made out of special threads that can conduct electricity, so if you put your phone in a pocket of a jacket or jeans made from that fabric, your phone’s battery will start charging as soon as it touches the fabric.

However, there’s a trick here, too – the fabric will also have its own battery, and you’ll have to charge it, too, so that it can later charge your phone (or any other device). But still, it’s much easier to charge some item from your clothes and then use it to charge a number of other gadgets – after all, the charged cloth will always be on you, and you won’t have to worry about charging your devices – they’ll be charged automatically when they’re in your pocket.

Such chargers, of course, won’t be available to all of us anytime soon, but the chances are big that in some 3-5 years manufacturers will really start producing such charger-clothes and phones that are compatible with them. Right now this cool fabric is being tested in the U.S., so let’s wait for more news about it soon.

Wireless Chargers

Another innovation is soon going to be introduced by Samsung in its upcoming Samsung Galaxy S3 – they say the phone will be charged wirelessly, being kept somewhere not far from the charger (in a radius of 2 meters or so). So your phone will automatically be charging almost all the time, and theoretically its battery will never die, and you won’t have to worry about plugging it in.

Of course, wireless charging is not actually something new, but what we had before is nothing compared to what we’ll see in the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S3, since the only chargers that have been available up to now worked only in 15-20cm from the phone, which is almost equal to using wires and not cool at all.

So very soon, in just a few years, the batteries of our phones and other devices will be charged using brand new technologies. The one from Samsung is expected to come this year, so keep an eye on it!

5 Hot Jewelry Trends to Get You Sprung for Spring

Saturday, February 11th, 2012

In 2011, jewelry tended to be all about the big, bold, and beautiful. A lot of the pieces seen on runways were chunky, bright, and colourful. 2012’s trends are leaning towards the classics, with a focus on sustainability, recycling, and rawness. Here are only a few of the trends we saw on the Spring/Summer collections:

  1. Chandelier earrings seem to be making a comeback, but not in the decadent, ultra-luxurious manner of old. New, modestly sized styles on the popular shape were seen on the models for LAGOS and John Hardy.
  2. Who says you can’t buy hair bling? Barrettes, hair bands, brooches, pins and tiaras are looking to be a real hit this season, especially among the younger, hipper clientele chucking tradition for form and function.
  3. Pearls aren’t just for your mother anymore; we saw a lot of them in new collections from LAGOS among others. It must have something to do with its abundance, prettiness, and affordability.
  4. Pendant necklaces are cute and one can layer a few pieces together to make a bold statement. For a variety of dresses, it’s one way of foolproof accessorizing. We saw a lot of them in the Max Azria collection this year.
  5. Recent years have focused on white gold, but yellow gold is making a comeback as well, as Elie Tahari and Roberto Cavalli made abundant use of pieces using the rich, vibrant colour. Combined with stones like beryl and quartz, the bright, sunny shade is perfect for spring. That and the fact that gold’s price has dropped down quite a bit, further reinforcing the new standard

Of course, nothing beats the classics. Diamond jewelry is still ranked as one of the most beautiful, timeless things a woman can wear no matter the season, making the price of this scintillating gem is well justified.
