Experience Edinburgh`s Culinary Delights!

Friday, April 13th, 2012

For those interested in food and drink, the city of Edinburgh is a must. It is full of gastronomic delights from Michelin starred restaurants to excellent delicatessens. Popular Scottish foods, such as haggis and shortbread, can be found in abundance and Edinburgh is actually home to some of the best suppliers of both. For those who like a tipple or two, Edinburgh is also home to the manufacturer of another famous Scottish product; Scottish whiskey.

Dining out

Edinburgh has a number of fantastic restaurants including Restaurant 21212, which was awarded a Michelin star in 2010, within a year of its opening. The chef, Paul Kitching, owns and runs the restaurant together with his wife Katie. As it is situated on the Royal Terrace, near to many Edinburgh hotels, tourists will find that they won’t have too far to walk after enjoying such a decadent meal.

Native products

Considered to be Scotland’s national dish, haggis is a dish made up of the minced heart and lungs of a sheep, mixed with onion and spices and traditionally encased inside a sheep’s stomach. Perhaps not everybody’s idea of gastronomic bliss, but a very popular meal nonetheless! For a chance to try one of the best examples of this famous Scottish dish, MacSweens of Edinburgh is the place to go. The firm is now so successful that they actually provide haggis to supermarkets throughout the UK, but they are based in Edinburgh.

Shortbread is another of Scotland’s products, which is so well known and loved, that there are a number of different brands available. However, these mass produced products are a world apart from traditional handmade shortbread. One of the best examples of this is made by a small family- run bakery called the Shortbread House. Visit their shop for your chance to sample their traditional shortbread, along with some slightly more unusual flavours including Stem Ginger and Macadamia Nut.

Interactive experiences

Scottish whiskey is famous throughout the world and there are many different brands available. The Scotch Whiskey Experience Tour, located on one of Edinburgh’s most famous streets, the Royal Mile, gives you an opportunity to find out more about the distilling process. There are three different tours available, along with tasting sessions and a morning master class. Whether you know very little about the tipple, or are a true whiskey enthusiast, the tours are extremely informative. Beginning with a trip through a replica whiskey distillery, visitors are shown how the craft of producing whiskey has developed from its cottage industry origins to the global export business it is today. At the end of the tour you are invited to try some samples and visit the whiskey shop, which is home to over three hundred different types of whiskey.

While it’s not a traditionally Scottish snack, visitors to Edinburgh can also treat themselves to some delicious handcrafted fudge from The Fudge Kitchen, which is also located on the Royal Mile. Giving visitors the opportunity to try their hand at making their own fudge, The Fudge Kitchen runs classes for groups of two or more. These classes allow people to taste a variety of different fudge flavours, as well as taking a box of their own handmade fudge home with them. Those with less time can simply buy some of their delicious wares.

Importance of light food recipes for weight balance

Worried of Obesity and related health problems? Light food recipe is the Key!!

WHO Global status report 2011 on noncommunicable diseases(NCDs) confirms that 36.1 million people died from NCDs in 2008.The report said that cardiovascular diseases account for most NCD deaths, or 17 million people annually, followed by cancer (7.6 million), respiratory disease (4.2 million), and diabetes (1.3 million).

These diseases are largely preventable, given a healthy diet policy and regular physical exercises. In this alarming scenario the buzz word making rounds across the globe is DETOX DIET. Detox diets are light food diets that claim to have detoxifying effects. The idea is that most food is contaminated by various ingredients deemed unnecessary for human life, such as flavor enhancers, food colorings, and artificial preservatives.

Detox diets can involve consuming extremely limited foods (only water or juice, a form of fasting), or eliminating certain foods from the diet (such as fats). Proponents claim that this will cause the body to burn accumulated stored fats, releasing fat-stored “toxins” into the blood, which can then be eliminated through the blood, skin, urine, feces and breath.

Also referred to as the ‘full body cleanse’, detox diets often use berries such as Acai berry to rid the body of toxins and dangerous substances. In addition to helping lose fat, Acai Berry detox diets have also been shown to assist in improving the heart health.

The study, which lasted for two years, followed 60 dieters who exercised three hours per week and stuck to a low calorie diet that incorporated the Acai berry. During the first three months of the study of these dieters on a cleansing, detox diet, the average amount of weight lost was 32 pounds. Over the entire two year period of the study, the average amount of weight loss was 14 pounds for each dieter.

Acai berry detox products and programs are essentially the newest whole-body detoxification diet policy, colon cleansing, and diet trend on the market. These products include a wide range of pills, powders, and liquid supplements. These products are believed to increase metabolism, decrease weight and help curb appetite.

The importance of a healthy colon (a part of our large intestine) and the reduction of free radicals in the body are regularly promoted by the established medical community. Colon health is essential for the body to glean nutrients from food, for maintaining a healthy body weight, and for reducing your chances of development of serious illnesses, including heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

An apple a day keeps the doctor away by consuming these free radicals! Periodic intake of fruits helps in reducing weight by reducing appetite too. Light food recipes with lots of fruits coupled with greater intake of water would check obesity; keep your heart healthy and other dangerous diseases at a considerable distance.

Longing to Fire Up Perfect Steaks on an Open-Fire Brick Grill?

Wednesday, November 16th, 2011

An open fire brick grill is the best place to grill a steak. It takes some experience, but once you get the hang of it, you will not want to use any other method of grilling. The combination of a good cut of beef, a uniform flame, good preparation techniques and the right amount of cooking time produces the perfect steak. You do not have to try very hard to achieve this; just follow the detailed tips below to get the perfect grilled steak every time.

  1. Create the perfect flame

Use charcoal, wood chips, or a combination of both. Hickory or maple wood chips give a nice bit of flavor to the meat and add something extra to the taste. You can use a fire starter such as lighter fluid if you have a problem getting the flame going, but that is sometimes not necessary. After the fire gets going even out the bed of coals and or wood chips. This will ensure that the heat is even throughout. The good thing about the brick grill is that it will keep the fire going at a constant temperature.

  1. Select the best cut of meat

Tenderloins and T-bone steaks are the best cuts of beef for grilling. If you can afford these prime beef cuts, go for it. These are the most tender and the ones that will give the juiciest steaks.

  1. Make sure not to over-prepare the beef

If you can, do not wash the beef or add any sort of liquid to it. To get rid of any possible bacteria, you may dabb the beef with a paper towel soaked in vinegar; this should do the trick. After “cleaning” the steak, leave it on the counter to allow it to get to room temperature; do not cook it before then or it will be too chewy.

  1. Grill the steak in the right way

Steaks need to grill for about 7 minutes on each side per pound of meat. If you remove the steak from the flame before it has cooked properly,  it will get tough if you try to put it back on to cook the rest of the way. Allow the steak to cook on each side to your desired level of doneness, then enjoy your juicy backyard, open-grilled steak.

Backyard steak is the best when it’s done right. There is something so satisfying about being able to taste the fruits of your labor. To prepare the perfect steak, follow the tips above.

Health and trace elements- What food can do for you

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

Despite all the fad diets and the strange theories about eating one type of food until you turn into it, there is some actual science behind diets. Protein and vitamins are well known. Much less known are vital trace elements, the body’s equivalent of the pool pump, which provides the resources to maintain the body and replenishes the nerves and organs. These elements

Trace elements basics

Trace elements are mineral compounds. In the early 1800s Dr. Schuessler coined the word “biochemistry”, and developed a therapeutic system of treatment based on “biochemical salts”.

There are 12 naturally occurring body salts which have multiple functions in the body. These salts are a good illustration of the role of mineral trace elements.

The original biochemical salts were:

  • Iron phosphate
  • Sodium sulphate
  • Sodium phosphate
  • Sodium chloride
  • Potassium chloride
  • Potassium sulphate
  • Magnesium phosphate
  • Calcium phosphate

how to make sandwich

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

If you are feeling very hungry, you need something to make you feel recharged. If you become weak by living on a diet of salads and juices, you should eat something wholesome.

esw

It is healthy and will give you an instant kick. Find out how to make sandwich with eggs and you will feel energized after enjoying it.

Ingredients for Sandwich with Eggs

You need two slices of brown bread, two big eggs, some freshly ground pepper, salt to taste, and one tablespoon of low fat mayonnaise, water, and one green onion. That is all you need to make this sandwich.

Recipe for Making Egg Sandwich

First of all you need to boil the eggs. To do this take a pot and add the eggs and egg marker to it. Pour water until the eggs get completely covered. Now let the water to boil for some time over high heat. Once it starts boiling reduce the heat to medium. You can allow the eggs to boils for about 12 minutes or just check the egg marker from time to time. Once they are done you have to carefully peel the eggs.

Before doing that throw away the hot water and add some cold water to the pot so that it immerses the eggs. Wait for about five minutes and after that start peeling. Next you have to rinse the eggs to make sure that there is no piece of shell.

You start mashing the eggs by using a potato masher or with a fork. Now add some pepper and salt to taste. Next you have to mix the mayonnaise. Slice the green onion finely and mix it along with the egg mixture. Take the two slices of brown bread and then spread this egg mixture uniformly on one slice. Place another slice on top and your sandwich is ready. You can also add some lettuce leaves between the slices, if you want a crunchy taste.
