Basements are a great way to extend your living space into an area that can serve many different purposes. Because a basement is a blank slate with its open layout, it’s your job to add components that will transform it into the perfect environment for your household’s needs.

What you want to use the basement for? Do you want a family room where you can all kick back to watch a movie? If so, you might be after a couch and recliners as part of a home theater setup. Do you dream about inviting friends over to hang out around your home bar? Start with bar stools, a selection of your favorite drinks and a pool table, dartboard or other games for entertainment. Would you love to send the kids down to their basement playroom so you can keep clutter out of your living room? A kid-only space with beanbag chairs, games and a wall painted with chalkboard paint will foster hours of fun and creativity. Want to use part of the basement for a home office where you can escape to work on projects in peace? Consider using a tall, wide bookshelf as a moveable wall. Curtains can also divide the space and hide any areas of the basement you use for storage.

Once you have your spaces established, get creative with your décor to turn one or more spaces into the basement you’ve been imagining. Give the room some character with wall hangings that complement the use you have planned for the space, such as movie posters, vintage advertisements, mirrors to make the space appear larger, neon signs for your bar or a bulletin board where you can tack up important papers or design ideas for inspiration. Because basements are at least partially underground, lighting is one of the keys to creating a perfect environment. Choose from halogens, overhead lights (ideally replacing the harsh glow of fluorescent bulbs), desk lamps or those you set on end tables for the perfect reading atmosphere. Work with a contractor or install glass block windows that will allow natural light to enter the room while also offering you and your family privacy.

The last step to making your basement space great is adding the extra touches that make it useful. For example, a surround-sound speaker system can make watching TV and movies much more enjoyable. A great area rug will give your kids somewhere cozy to play on the floor and brighten up the room. A custom-made bar will make a great gathering space for your game room and a fun place to hang out after the big game or to watch weekly sporting events. The important thing is to make sure you have the things that make you feel like the space is complete, not only functionally, but with the decor as well.

Cost

Cost per square yard or foot is the main component when looking at the price of a carpet. But there are many other factors to consider.

1. Furniture – carpet installers may charge you for moving furniture in order to actually get the carpet installed.
2. Old floor covering – old floor covering needs to be disposed of
3. Product delivery – if not included in the cost per square yard/foot, suppliers will have a separate delivery charge based on the size of your carpet
4. Installation – again, if this is not included in the original price, installation is also expressed in square feet
5. Maintenance – maintenance is usually optional but a recommended cost to incur. Warranty may be another factor.

Warranty

Getting warranty on your carpet may do you more harm than good financially. In general, warranty terms are very detailed and strict, and you may not get overall profit for the cost of a warranty. Again, this changes from supplier to supplier, so have a look into it, although it is not recommended.

Seams

Unless you have a small room, you will have seams. Most carpets are around 15 feet wide. The lighting and placement of furniture in your room will determine how visible the seams are between carpets—this may be a priority for some carpet buyers.

Stains

How long do you think you can go without stains? A month? Maybe two? It’s going to happen, regardless of how careful you are. Stain protection is a vital factor when buying a carpet, especially if you have children or clumsy housemates. You may want to look into high quality carpets and warranty packages.

Nap

The nap of a carpet runs in one direction. So when you vacuum or, sometimes walk, on a carpet, it may cause uneven shading. This can be avoided by windows treatments and placement of furniture, but shouldn’t be a big concern anyway.

A home doesn’t need to be modern to be green, but I like the modern ones. I’d love to see entire neighborhoods of modern green homes. I like the idea of changing the way we perceive the single-family home, too. Denser neighborhoods ? Sure. Residential wind turbines? Definitely. Solar on the roof? You bet. But right now, we’re still in the early stages of recognizing legitimate green homes. And as far as certified green homes are concerned, there’s only SEVEN LEED Platinum homes right now. That’s changing though. I think it’s important to study green homes and their lighter footprint, so I’ve put together my list of the Top 5 Super Green Modern Homes. They’re ultra-stylish and ultra-green. Two have obtained the Platinum certification, two are aiming for it, and one is super green no certifications needed. They’re listed below in no particular order.

PROJECT7TEN – Venice, CA (under construction)

This home was designed by Melinda Gray, founder of GRAYmatter Architecture, and is currently under construction. Upon completion in the fall, there will be an open house for everyone to take a peek. You may even be able to buy it, if you’re interested. Located at 710 Milwood Avenue in Venice, California, this home is shooting for LEED Platinum certification. Some planned green features include a rainwater reclamation system and grey water recycling, locally-sourced sustainable materials, recycled content countertops and insulation, FSC-certified lumber, rooftop solar panels, native landscaping for shading, Energy Star appliances, and Kohler water-efficient fixtures. MKLOTUS – San Francisco, CA (under construction)

Designed by Michelle Kaufmann Designs and built by ExtremeHomes, mkLotus will be unveiled at West Coast Green in San Francisco from September 20-22, 2007. 5IVE – Minneapolis, MN (under construction)

John Dwyer, professor at University of Minnesota and founder of Shelter Architecture, designed this home for Jeff and Saleno Gallo. 5IVE is built with precast concrete walls with an r-value in the 30s, has one of the most efficient heating and cooling systems on the market, and will use the greenest possible materials, products, appliances, and fixtures. LIVINGHOMES RK1 – Santa Monica, CA (completed)

This is the first residential building to receive the USGBC’s Platinum LEED-H rating, and due to the media frenzy associated with this home, it has raised the bar for what’s possible in residential construction: zero energy, zero water, zero waste, zero carbon, and zero emissions. LivingHomes received a total of 91 out of a total possible 108 points required to obtain the Platinum rating. It will be 80% more efficient than similar sized home and was constructed with 75% less waste than a traditional one. Some green features of this house include a rooftop photovoltaic system, radiant heating system within the floor, grey water system for irrigation, LED lighting, EnviroGlas recycled glass countertops, and the use of low-VOC paints and FSC-certified lumber. HEATHER’S HOME – Weatherford, TX (completed)

Designed by Gary Olp of GGO Architects, this home is the first home in Texas to receive LEED-H Platinum certification. Heather’s Home is 2,038 sf and was built for about $117 psf. But what’s more incredible is the heating and cooling bill, which averages from $20-30 per month — pretty incredible for Texas! Some green features of this house include a rainwater collection system with 3,000 gallon holding tank, low-flush toilets, native landscaping, 20 SEER Daikin HVAC system, tankless water heater powered by rooftop solar panels, Green Guard certified Formica kitchen counters, and InterFLOR modular carpet. Simple Ways to Move Your Body

You can start the process of weight loss now by adding a little more activity to your life. If you’re not ready for a structured program, start small. Every little bit counts and it all adds up to burning more calories.

• Turn off the TV. Once a week, turn off the TV and do something a little more physical with your family. Play games, take a walk…almost anything will be more active than sitting on the couch.
• Walk more. Look for small ways to walk more. When you get the mail, take a walk around the block, take the dog for an extra outing each day or walk on your treadmill for 5 minutes before getting ready for work.
• Do some chores. Shoveling snow, working in the garden, raking leaves, sweeping the floor…these kinds of activities may not be ‘vigorous’ exercise, but they can keep you moving while getting your house in order.
• Pace while you talk. When you’re on the phone, pace around or even do some cleaning while gabbing. This is a great way to stay moving while doing something you enjoy.
• Be aware. Make a list of all the physical activities you do on a typical day. If you find that the bulk of your time is spent sitting, make another list of all the ways you could move more–getting up each hour to stretch or walk, walk the stairs at work, etc.
