An inventor with a penchant for explosives has designed a set of rockets in the shape of a giant box of crayons.
John Coker has always enjoyed building things that explode and after a friend mentioned that his creations looked like Crayola crayons he started building the crayon-shaped rockets.
Mr Coker started building the colourful rockets in 1998 as one of his first projects.

Lift-off: Mr Coker’s rockets are launched, but only four of the eight take off
Work resumed in August 2004, and more than six years later, the project was finally completed.
He recently headed out to Nevada’s Black Rock desert to test them out.
Based on the small eight-pack of crayons, the three-and-a-half foot long rockets were launched from a box designed to look like the classic yellow and green Crayola box.
But, despite looking like child’s play, the mission was only a partial success with just four of the eight rockets blasting into the sky.
Inexplicably, the green, brown, yellow and orange crayons remained in the box.
Of the four rockets that went off, the violet crayon was found with a broken fin.The other three were found without major damage.

Mr Coker has hinted that he will test the crayon-shaped rockets again.
Mr Coker said: ‘I used to enjoy building rockets when I was a kid, but after a 20-year absence I found a much-expanded hobby with much larger, more exciting and more dangerous rockets for bigger boys.
‘Since a friend pointed out that my rockets looked like a crayon, I’ve had the idea in back of my mind to build a crayon rocket.
‘Not just a crayon rocket, but a pack of Crayola crayon rockets.
‘On the day, the crayons went pretty high and we think they got to 2928 feet.
‘This was a great project and the flight was a crowd pleaser. It was a shame that only four of the rockets flew.’
It would seem the rockets are a one-off and given the length of time it took Mr Coker to make one pack, you can see why.

Hummer’s suffering is about to be ended.
The lumbering giant is being put down by patriarchal General Motors, the American motoring giant 61%-owned by the US government.
It is a sign of the times.
The former favourite of Moscow’s moneyed, and the wheels once favoured by California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, has been hit by a double whammy of tighter belts in some of its markets and a dramatic shift in public opinion in others.
Driving the Hummer is an experience
|
Large gas-guzzlers are increasingly being shunned by frugal, environmentally aware, or simply fashion conscious punters eager to downsize their modes of transport.
As a symbol of conspicuous consumption, or of a lack of regard for the environment, the Hummer makes its owners look distinctly out of touch with the current public mood.
It seems even the Chinese authorities are steering clear of the beast.
“The brand proposition of Hummer itself goes against the strategic outline of the Chinese government, which is mainly that they want to produce energy-efficient vehicles,” explains Klaus Paur, North Asia director for market research company TNS.
Which might go some way to explain why Chinese firm Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machines pulled the plug on an earlier agreement to buy the brand, having failed to gain clearance from Chinese regulators.
King of the Road
The Hummer is arguably the most aggressive looking vehicle there is, and no wonder given that the original H1, launched 18 years ago, was based on the US Humvee military vehicle.
Later versions were less macho, but only marginally so. Its butch looks were key to the marque’s image.
The original Hummer was based on the military Humvee
|
Driving a Hummer down the broad streets of Detroit is an experience, though what you get out of it depends on the strength of your nerves.
Seated high and mighty in a seat resembling a throne above the Hummer’s humming engine gives you a powerful feeling of being King of the Road.
Unless you are a mere journalist in a borrowed test car, that is, in which case the fear of hitting something, or even rolling straight over the odd low-slung Mustang, can easily make you sweat.
By the time you have managed to find a parking place wide enough you will resemble a genuine Desert Rat.
Still hope
But as Hummer production seems destined to end it is also clear that the truck will be missed by its loyal crowd of fans.
Indeed, there are still people out there who are convinced the vehicle has a future and that a market remains for it.
And GM is still eager to hear from anyone who wants to buy the brand.
“In the early phases of the wind-down, we’ll entertain offers and determine their viability,” says GM spokesman Nick Richards.
So although it might be time to prepare for Hummer’s funeral, it may well be premature to carve out its tombstone.

AdMob
, the mobile advertising network currently being acquired by Google, this morning featured
the latest results
of its monthly analysis of consumer usage and attitudes across the Android, iPhone and webOS application platforms in its January 2010 AdMob Mobile Metrics Report
.
Among the most interesting things the survey found is the conclusion that 91 percent of iPhone users would recommend their device, compared to 84 percent of Android users and only 69 percent of webOS users.
That 22% difference has got to hurt for Palm.

Other than that, not much noteworthy in this month’s survey results, which states that consumers who use iPhone and Android devices showed “remarkably similar” activity levels, downloading approximately the same total number of applications and spending approximately the same amount of time using them. What I would deem logical and not remarkable at all.
AdMob further says iPhone users continue to download more paid applications, with 50 percent of users purchasing at least one paid application a month compared to 21 percent of Android users. The survey also included consumers on webOS devices and found that they downloaded fewer paid and free applications, although they remain active.
AdMob says it stores and analyzes handset and operator data from every ad request in a network of more than 15,000 mobile Web sites and iPhone, Android, and webOS applications. The AdMob share is calculated by the percentage of requests received from a particular handset; it is a measure of relative mobile Web and application usage and does not represent handset sales.
Additionally, AdMob claims that the number of ad requests to their network went up 32 percent between December and January, to a total of 15.2 billion ads.

this is a new development mobile in mobile phone, see the complete picture below :

Window Phone – concept phone On one hand, clear conceptual phones already, so this is not just the first, but on the other, the so-called Window Phone has one impressive feature – its transparent housing varies depending on the weather! Thus, in the sunny days, the screen will be completely transparent, on a rainy day it will appear «virtual» drop, but it is covered with frost frost. Ie translucent screen will look like as well as present a window into a variety of weather. I do not know how it will be practical, but at least, very original!

Ancient Egyptians invented the first substance like the paper we know today called Papyrus. Papyrus scrolls were made by taking slices of the inner part of the papyrus stem, flattening then pounded into a hard, thin sheet. The word “paper” comes from the word “papyrus”. The Paper that we know today was invented by Ts’ai Lun in A.D. 105, It is believed that he mixed hemp, mulberry bark, and rags with water, mashed it into a pulp, pressed out the liquid and hung it to dry in the sun. Paper was born and this humble mixture would set off one of mankind’s greatest communication

revolutions.
Today there is a revival in homemade papermaking crafts. Not only is it a fun experience for you and the kids, but it’s a good way to recycle waste into wonderful possibilities.
Below you will find a simple papermaking recipe to get you started. If this is the first time you are making paper, don’t be afraid to experiment with different fibers, you don’t have to stick with paper related products. Add whole flower heads to the pulp mixture after it has been through the blender. You can add scraps of yarn, tin foil, even seeds. Its all comes down to what you want. Experiment with different textures and colors after all Ts’ai Lun did! Remember, some of your ideas will turn out while others may not. Have fun with it, express your creativity. (more…)

Eco gadgets are most definitely a growth market now. Sure there are lots of gadgets that are a waste of time and money, but there are also some gadgets that are genuinely useful. In this article, Dan talks about 10 of his favourite eco-friendly gadgets that are designed with the green traveler in mind.
1. Wind up Torch

If we’re going camping or anywhere else where there’s likely to be a lack of lighting when night falls, then we need a torch. Conventional torches eat through lots of batteries, so something rechargeable would be great. Rather than use standard rechargable batteries, why not have a wind up torch? I have two of these torches myself, and they’re fantastic! Just a minute or so of winding up and you get around 30 minutes of torch light. In practice, the light dims after a few minutes, so you just top it up again. You never need to worry about finding some batteries ever again!
2. Wind Up Walkie Talkies

On the theme of wind up gadgets, there’s a great way to keep in touch with your party, or kids, or anyone really, and that’s with a walkie talkie. However, we hit the same issues with batteries, so how about some wind up walkie talkies? For a minute of winding, you get 2 minutes of talking time and 10 minutes of standby time. Perfect for emergencies, and you don’t need to worry about mobile phone reception either.
3. Wind up 2-Way FM/AM Radio

If you want to go a little more advanced, then the 2-Way AM/FM/NOAA Emergency Crank Radio gives you a more bulky version of a walkie talkie, but you also get FM and AM radio. This means you can listen to local radio stations whilst you’re out traveling. Again, no need to worry about batteries, as you just crank it up for more hours of musical enjoyment.
4. Freeloader Solar Charger

f you are taking a mobile phone, games console or an MP3 player, you’ll only get a few hours use out of them on a single charge. If you’re out traveling somewhere sunny, then you can enjoy your gadgets for much longer with a Freeloader Solar Charger. In sunny conditions, the Freeloader charges up its internal battery in about 7 to 9 hours. When you want to charge up your gadget, just hook it up to the Freeloader charger.
5. 2C Solar Cap

When you’re walking about at night, you’ll need a torch to see what you’re doing, and you could use the wind up torch mentioned above. However, if you need both hands free to read maps, then the 2C Solar Cap is really useful. I’ve tried it myself and the bright white LEDs are at the perfect angle to light the path in front of you as you’re walking. You only need to charge the cap up in sunlight for a couple of hours to get a few hours of light for night hiking.
6. SteriPEN Water Sterilization Pen

Right, time for a drink, but you’ve run out of drinking water. How do you know the locally available water is safe to drink? There’s no need to worry with a SteriPEN. The SteriPEN uses ultraviolet light to sterilise clear drinking water (i.e. filtered water) to kill any nasty bacteria that remain in the water. The SteriPEN comes in a range of sizes, including a very portable traveler size. A single set of AA batteries is capable of sterilizing up to 100 litres of water, and even then you can use rechargeable batteries.
7. Solar Pocket Shower

It’s been a long days walk and you need a shower, thankfully you set up a Solar Pocket Shower in the morning and filled it up with 10 litres of cold water. Thanks to the sun’s energy, the water in the black PVC-free bag heated up, meaning you can have a nice warm shower in
8. Popup Shelter with Solar Shower

Stripping in the middle of a field may not be great for your modesty, so if you’d like to be a little more discrete, consider the popup shelter with a solar shelter. Basically its the same solar shower, but in a tall tent-like cubicle to allow you to shower and change in comfort.
9. Sh*t Box

Nature calls, so where’s the nearest bush? Well save the bush the trauma and try the cardboard toilet instead! The rather oddly name device contains disposable liners, which can be buried when you’re done. The bags are biodegradable, so they do no harm to the environment.
10. Solar-powered Backpack

Finally we need something to keep all of our gadgets in! The Blackhills Solar Backpacks are designed to top up all your mobile phone, PDA, games console, MP3 gadgets, etc. Thanks to a whole collection of charging adaptors, you’ll easily be able to charge up pretty much any gadget you can throw at it. There’s even a headphone socket so that you can keep your music gadgets dry inside the backpack.
So there you go, 10 eco gadgets for your next adventure. Got any eco gadgets you recommend for travelling?

we found this interesting 10 tips to save the energy on www.dakotacountyne.org and the tips is also simple and eligible to apply on our daily activities.
Today, fossil fuels (oil, coal, natural gas) are still used to generate most of our energy-both at power plants and in automobiles. Consumption continues even though resources are limited.
An importance focus for everyone should include the reduction of energy consumption and the reliance on fossil fuels.
Check out these ten things you can do to save energy. They are simple, easy, and just make sense.
1. Turn off lights, appliances, TV’s, and radios when not being used.
2. Run the dishwasher, washing machine, and dryer only with full loads.
3. Hang clothes on a clothesline outside to dry when weather is nice.
4. Walk, ride a bike, take the bus, or car pool to get to places.
5. If you drive a car, have regular tune-ups, change air and oil filters, and properly inflate tires.
6. Turn down the thermostat 1 or 2 degrees and/or install a programmable thermostat. (Should take old thermostats to a HHW collection facility.
7. Weatherproof drafty windows with caulk or plastic window insulation kits and add door sweeps to doors.
8. Try a “low flow” shower head and faucet (available at most hardware stores).
9. Replace “regular” incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs.
10. If replacing appliances or electronics, purchase energy efficient models.
i hope this tips useful for all of you.

i found this blog interesting, but it just the copy articles i took from free articles website. so enjoy reading everybody
daily saving times are about how we save all resources from our daily activity, here the articles about daylight saving time :
Last year (2007) was the first time in 20 years that new days were established for changing to Daylight Saving Time. Chances are you survived last year’s change to Daylight Saving Time on March 11th and then back to Standard Time in November. The problem is unless your device was upgraded to use the new dates your clocks will not change automatically on the right day this year, the second Sunday in March (March 9, 2008) and your clocks may then mistakenly try and adjust the clock on the old date which was the first Sunday in April (April 6, 2008).
Using Retrevo to Set Your Clocks
Although some of your gadgets can get time updates over the airwaves or cable most will require manual setting. Retrevo can find the exact page in the user manual for most consumer electronics products like digital cameras, camcorders and VCRs. From any page on Retrevo.com you can enter the product name and model along with a phrase like “set time, change time, set clock, or change clock.”
Here are some examples on Retrevo:
Sony Camcorder : Sony DVD 505 set time
Panasonic DVR : Panasonic DMR ES25 set clock
Sony Bravia TV : sony bravia xbr 40 set clock
Cell Phone Clocks
Most cell phones synchronize their time to a central service and should receive the correct time on the correct day. If not, you may have to set the time manually.
Check the Clocks On Your Computers
There is a good chance that most administrators were able to get the patches and updates they needed for servers, desktops, and laptops from companies like Sun, IBM, Oracle, Apple, and Microsoft to make the time change transition automatic but just in case it’s a good idea for individuals to have automatic updates enabled on Microsoft Windows-based computers. Vista is all set with the new dates.
If you have the automatic adjust for DST box checked you need to have the update from Microsoft. If you have automatic updates enabled there’s a good chance you already have the update.
More Information on Daylight Saving Time
What is Daylight Saving Time?
Daylight Saving Time moves the clocks ahead one hour causing the sun, in affect, to set an hour later. The resulting extra hour of daylight in the evening saves energy, reduces traffic accidents, and even lowers crime rates.
*Even though it’s acceptable to say Daylight Savings Time the correct way is Daylight Saving Time.
What’s The Problem?
In the days of analog time keeping devices it wasn’t a big deal to move the hour hand once around the dial. Today the average household has at least 5-10 devices with digital clocks; everything from computers to VCRs to thermostats.
Compounding the problem is the fact that many devices have been programmed to automatically reset the time on the day the time change normally takes place. Not only will the clock not be changed on the correct day but will change automatically again on the wrong day. Be sure to check the time again on the old dates to make sure the time doesn’t get automatically changed.
Hold the Phone
This just in from a University of California study that used data from Indian which showed that DST does not in fact safe energy. Here’s a posting on that study from Chris Null.
i don’t really know what the articles are about, but i hope it usefull for you
