Basements are a great way to extend your living space into an area that can serve many different purposes. Because a basement is a blank slate with its open layout, it’s your job to add components that will transform it into the perfect environment for your household’s needs.
What you want to use the basement for? Do you want a family room where you can all kick back to watch a movie? If so, you might be after a couch and recliners as part of a home theater setup. Do you dream about inviting friends over to hang out around your home bar? Start with bar stools, a selection of your favorite drinks and a pool table, dartboard or other games for entertainment. Would you love to send the kids down to their basement playroom so you can keep clutter out of your living room? A kid-only space with beanbag chairs, games and a wall painted with chalkboard paint will foster hours of fun and creativity. Want to use part of the basement for a home office where you can escape to work on projects in peace? Consider using a tall, wide bookshelf as a moveable wall. Curtains can also divide the space and hide any areas of the basement you use for storage.
Once you have your spaces established, get creative with your décor to turn one or more spaces into the basement you’ve been imagining. Give the room some character with wall hangings that complement the use you have planned for the space, such as movie posters, vintage advertisements, mirrors to make the space appear larger, neon signs for your bar or a bulletin board where you can tack up important papers or design ideas for inspiration. Because basements are at least partially underground, lighting is one of the keys to creating a perfect environment. Choose from halogens, overhead lights (ideally replacing the harsh glow of fluorescent bulbs), desk lamps or those you set on end tables for the perfect reading atmosphere. Work with a contractor or install glass block windows that will allow natural light to enter the room while also offering you and your family privacy.
The last step to making your basement space great is adding the extra touches that make it useful. For example, a surround-sound speaker system can make watching TV and movies much more enjoyable. A great area rug will give your kids somewhere cozy to play on the floor and brighten up the room. A custom-made bar will make a great gathering space for your game room and a fun place to hang out after the big game or to watch weekly sporting events. The important thing is to make sure you have the things that make you feel like the space is complete, not only functionally, but with the decor as well.
What are you using your basement space for? What have you done or seen others do to make a basement comfortable and useful for get-togethers with friends and family?

It’s spring time and there’s a new feel in the air. You want to get rid of your old dusty carpets and get the fresh feeling of a new one. Do you just go out and buy one, then? NO. There are a number of factors to consider other than style when it comes to buying carpets—remember, this is a long term decision. Luckily, I am here to guide on your path to a smart carpet purchase.
Color
Yes, you guessed it, the most important aspect to a carpet is color. Remember that your carpet will take up the majority of your room, so choose your colors wisely. Match it with the walls, furniture, whatever you think suits best. If you like to redecorate often and change furniture, you may want to invest in a neutral color. Carpets you see in-store, catalogues, or online, are usually lighter when installed in your home.
Colors also affect the size of your room. Wait, what? How can a carpet make your room bigger? –It’s actually a visual illusion where darker colors make your room look smaller and lighter colors make it look bigger. But of course, that shouldn’t be your main concern. Let’s look at other factors.
Padding
Padding is the layer of cushion under the carpet. You know that feeling when you step on the carpet and it feels like heaven? Well that’s the padding at work, not the carpet itself. As you may have already guessed, the padding is a vital decision when purchasing a carpet. Good padding not only makes a carpet more comfortable, it also increases the lifespan by protecting it from wear and tear. Good quality padding will be more expensive, but a good investment in terms of quality for price.
Cost
Cost per square yard or foot is the main component when looking at the price of a carpet. But there are many other factors to consider.
- Furniture – carpet installers may charge you for moving furniture in order to actually get the carpet installed.
- Old floor covering – old floor covering needs to be disposed of
- Product delivery – if not included in the cost per square yard/foot, suppliers will have a separate delivery charge based on the size of your carpet
- Installation – again, if this is not included in the original price, installation is also expressed in square feet
- Maintenance – maintenance is usually optional but a recommended cost to incur. Warranty may be another factor.
Warranty
Getting warranty on your carpet may do you more harm than good financially. In general, warranty terms are very detailed and strict, and you may not get overall profit for the cost of a warranty. Again, this changes from supplier to supplier, so have a look into it, although it is not recommended.
Seams
Unless you have a small room, you will have seams. Most carpets are around 15 feet wide. The lighting and placement of furniture in your room will determine how visible the seams are between carpets—this may be a priority for some carpet buyers.
Stains
How long do you think you can go without stains? A month? Maybe two? It’s going to happen, regardless of how careful you are. Stain protection is a vital factor when buying a carpet, especially if you have children or clumsy housemates. You may want to look into high quality carpets and warranty packages.
Nap
The nap of a carpet runs in one direction. So when you vacuum or, sometimes walk, on a carpet, it may cause uneven shading. This can be avoided by windows treatments and placement of furniture, but shouldn’t be a big concern anyway.

A home doesn’t need to be modern to be green, but I like the modern ones. I’d love to see entire neighborhoods of modern green homes. I like the idea of changing the way we perceive the single-family home, too. Denser neighborhoods ? Sure. Residential wind turbines? Definitely. Solar on the roof? You bet. But right now, we’re still in the early stages of recognizing legitimate green homes. And as far as certified green homes are concerned, there’s only SEVEN LEED Platinum homes right now. That’s changing though. I think it’s important to study green homes and their lighter footprint, so I’ve put together my list of the Top 5 Super Green Modern Homes. They’re ultra-stylish and ultra-green. Two have obtained the Platinum certification, two are aiming for it, and one is super green no certifications needed. They’re listed below in no particular order.
PROJECT7TEN – Venice, CA (under construction)
This home was designed by Melinda Gray, founder of GRAYmatter Architecture, and is currently under construction. Upon completion in the fall, there will be an open house for everyone to take a peek. You may even be able to buy it, if you’re interested. Located at 710 Milwood Avenue in Venice, California, this home is shooting for LEED Platinum certification. Some planned green features include a rainwater reclamation system and grey water recycling, locally-sourced sustainable materials, recycled content countertops and insulation, FSC-certified lumber, rooftop solar panels, native landscaping for shading, Energy Star appliances, and Kohler water-efficient fixtures. Visit the Project7ten website.
MKLOTUS – San Francisco, CA (under construction)
Designed by Michelle Kaufmann Designs and built by ExtremeHomes, mkLotus will be unveiled at West Coast Green in San Francisco from September 20-22, 2007. Some planned green features include a green living roof, rooftop solar power (100% powered by solar), rain and groundwater catchment system, grey water system, FSC-certified wood for framing, SIP wall assembly, open cell foam insulation by Icynene, Noritz on-demand water heater, folding glass door walls by Nanawall, bamboo flooring, no-VOC paints by Yolo, LED lighting throughout, EcoResin interior sliding door panels by 3form, Energy Star appliances, countertops by Concreteworks, FSC-certified cabinets over Roseburg Skyblend particleboard, floor and wall recycled glass tiles by Terra Green, and water-efficient fixtures by Kohler. Visit the mkLotus website.
5IVE – Minneapolis, MN (under construction)

John Dwyer, professor at University of Minnesota and founder of Shelter Architecture, designed this home for Jeff and Saleno Gallo. 5IVE is built with precast concrete walls with an r-value in the 30s, has one of the most efficient heating and cooling systems on the market, and will use the greenest possible materials, products, appliances, and fixtures. I like reading 5IVE’s blog called “Diary of a LEED Platinum Home,” which shares with us decisions, events, and thoughts en route to completion. Visit the 5IVE website.
LIVINGHOMES RK1 – Santa Monica, CA (completed)

This is the first residential building to receive the USGBC’s Platinum LEED-H rating, and due to the media frenzy associated with this home, it has raised the bar for what’s possible in residential construction: zero energy, zero water, zero waste, zero carbon, and zero emissions. LivingHomes received a total of 91 out of a total possible 108 points required to obtain the Platinum rating. It will be 80% more efficient than similar sized home and was constructed with 75% less waste than a traditional one. Some green features of this house include a rooftop photovoltaic system, radiant heating system within the floor, grey water system for irrigation, LED lighting, EnviroGlas recycled glass countertops, and the use of low-VOC paints and FSC-certified lumber. Visit the LivingHomes website.
HEATHER’S HOME – Weatherford, TX (completed)

Designed by Gary Olp of GGO Architects, this home is the first home in Texas to receive LEED-H Platinum certification. Heather’s Home is 2,038 sf and was built for about $117 psf. But what’s more incredible is the heating and cooling bill, which averages from $20-30 per month — pretty incredible for Texas! Some green features of this house include a rainwater collection system with 3,000 gallon holding tank, low-flush toilets, native landscaping, 20 SEER Daikin HVAC system, tankless water heater powered by rooftop solar panels, Green Guard certified Formica kitchen counters, and InterFLOR modular carpet. Visit the Heather’s Home website.

While shopping electronic items online you can offer saving and convenience to both consumers and business. Do not give your financial credit details, credit card facts or any other personal information, if you are a reputed trader it is a positive sign to win anybody’s confidence. Here are some basic safe shopping guidelines that can help online shoppers to ensure that their online shopping experience is enjoyable, easy, safe and secure.

One of the most comfortable methods to buy electronics items is to search for availability of the existing product or similar product range in the online websites. You can also visit Currys Voucher Code for availing discounts and offers on all electronic items. Sometimes the retailers impose selling trick for high-priced accessories, which hardly has any utility in the operating function of the key gadget. Sometimes the offer of extensive warranty is also added to the purchase price of an item and thus it makes the price range higher; in these case it is prudent to discard the option for extended warranty because most of the consumer electronics product play an important role within the warranty period and at the end of the warranty period, if any sort of service is requisite, it will approach in equal cost of the extended warranty value.

A washing machine is a large consumer for energy as well as water, the key to selecting the right one is to purchase the most energy-efficient reproduction that fits your lifestyle and space and to always use the right amount of detergent for the washer and your water hardness.

Are you moving into a new home? It’s probably an exciting time for you and your family. You’ll be moving into a new place that has new sights and sounds. Unfortunately, there’s a lot of packing that needs to be done in a short amount of time.
Take some of the stress out of moving by having a plan to avoid problems that may pop up. Once you have a solid plan in place, the transition from your old home to your new one can be easier and will be more enjoyable for everyone.
Deciding What Stays and What Goes
Do you really need to take that beat-up couch in the basement to your new home? What about those garbage bags full of stuffed animals your teenage kids no longer play with? These are serious things to consider, because you can waste valuable time and money moving stuff you don’t need. Take the time before you pack to decide what things you’ll take with you and what things will be donated, put up for sale or given away to other family members or friends.
Be ruthless in your decisions. If you haven’t used something or looked at it for 12 months or more, it’s a safe bet that you don’t need it anymore. Try to base your decisions on several factors, such as:
• Will the item fit into your new decor plans?
• Do you have numerous similar items, and can you part with a few of them?
• Will large furniture pieces fit through the door openings or windows of your new home?
• Are the items run-down to the point where buying new items will be better?
If you truly can’t get rid of things, like that eight-track collection that’s been sitting in an attic box, consider putting it into storage. Place the items into durable containers that are airtight and waterproof. This will guarantee them to be in good condition when you want to dig them up again.
Taking Care of Money Matters
Don’t forget about taking care of your bills and finances while you’re packing. If you have bills due during the week of your move, make sure to pay them a week ahead of time. Call utility companies and schedule the day you want all your utilities turned on.
Also, have emergency cash on hand in case anything unexpected happens during the move. You’ll also want to have a bit of spending cash during the first couple of days of your move to order take-out or eat at a restaurant since cookware won’t be unpacked yet or you’ll be too tired to cook.
Moving Yourself or Having Helpers
The most important thing you have to decide is whether you’ll be moving all the items yourself, have family and friends help or hire a moving company. The most cost-effective approach is to move the items yourself, but you may not be able to do this because of the number of items you have or any health problems that hinder you.
Enlisting your family and friends is another option — just make sure to compensate them for all the hard work and time they took to help you out. If conflicting work schedules prevent friends from helping out, and you can’t get family members to lend a hand, consider hiring a moving company.
Moving companies are ideal if you’re involved in a long distance move. A moving company can ensure your items will be moved safely to your new place. Always research moving companies you’re interested in so you hire a legitimate business. Always check with the Better Business Bureau to see how many complaints were issued against the company.
Enjoy Your Move
Moving can be stressful, but if you give yourself enough time to plan and pack, you can enjoy it more. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from family and friends or hire a moving company to do the work. Try to make your move as easy as possible so you can start relaxing in your new home.

A building inspection is not the first thing that comes to a lot of peoples’ minds. Building inspections can serve a number of different purposes. They make sure the house you are occupying is safe for friends and family and a building inspection can also significantly alter the value of a house or building you are looking to buy or trying to sell. The report generated by the building inspection can tell you a great deal about where you are living or would like to live. A building inspection is a complicated process, but not for the person who is requesting the inspection. When I was buying a property in Brisbane, it was heavily infested and I didn’t know. I wish I had done a pre-purchase building and pest inspection by these guys
Hrte’s what the inspectors do:
After placing a call to the inspectors office and setting up an appointment, a Building Inspector will come to the property. Their job is to check on everything that makes the building what it is. They will inspect the walls, the foundation, the roof and the floors. This is a major thing since any of these not being in great condition could reduce the safety of the dwelling. The inspector will examine the electrical lines running through out the building as bad or faulty wiring is the cause of many fires. It is the job of the inspector to go over the entire property with a fine toothed comb to find any flaws the building may have. They even go into such detail that they will check the pipes and smoke detectors to assure they are all in working order. After checking over the building, they will go on to inspect the rest of the property including the lawn.
For the seller, a good inspection result can mean an increase in the value of a home. Although it is costly to have an inspector come to the property, it can be well worth it in the end. For a home buyer, having a house inspected before purchasing it is a good idea. It will allow them to know what flaws can be found in and outside of the building. With a detailed inspection report, the buyer can then know if the house is worth purchasing or if there is too much money needed to get it in good shape. The buyer and seller can then further negotiate what repairs they would need to see done before signing the papers and finalizing the deal.
A building inspection can tell you how long your house or building will last. Whether you are looking into repairs for your property, buying or selling a property, a building inspection is the best way to know what is right and wrong with the building in question.

Summer is the time when people come in large numbers to use the pool. Whenever summer approaches, the pool owners ensure that their backyard pool is ready for people to swim in. This preparation involves filling it with water, cleaning, and checking things such as the filter or putting in a pool aerator.
Pool Aerator: The Aeration Process
Now lets explore the meaning and workings of a pool aerator. The of aeration process in water does not stop at pools alone, but extends to both hot tubs and fish tanks, too.
Aeration simply means infusing air into water. Aerators are commonly seen attached the end of your kitchen and bathroom sink faucet, or on your shower head. The benefit of an aerator in these types of faucets is to help in saving you as much as a half of your water usage. Aerators basically turn the single water flow into numerous smaller water flows, hence they introduce air into the water, and they reduce the water flow while maintaining the water pressure.
What a Pool Aerator Does For Your Pool
What a pool aerator can do to the swimming pools OKC homeowners work to maintain remains the biggest question? It does a number of things, for example, a pool aerator will help in cooling the pool water off; this in turn makes it useful in keeping the pool water at an enjoyable temperature that the pool owners desire when it is hot outside. To achieve this, sprays water and exposes it to air, cooling down the pool water.
Secondly, what a pool aerator does for your pool is prevents stagnation. Stagnation may lead to the building up of nasty things like algae. Having experienced this algae growth in pools, many pool owners understand very well how vulnerable stagnate water can be to getting dirty. This makes the algae prevention be a regular part of summer maintenance for the swimming pool.
Types of Pool Aerators
Pool aerators come in a few different types, some of which are just designed to bring fun to the pool while others are just for looks. A water fountain aerator, for example, can be a very attractive water feature to add to your pool. They are available in a variety of sizes coming with a number of levels and different features.
Even though pool aerators are mainly for looks, they can also bring much fun. Some pool aerators are made to be used as water cannons. Certainly, this will bring great fun for the kids, and also cool your pool as well.
The Process of Installing a Pool Aerator
Step 1
In the first pool aerator installation step, you need to turn off all the pool equipment. After which you unscrew the jet head and any other thing that is covering the pool’s return line.
Step 2
For this step, you need to screw in the pool aerator in to return line. Her caution should be taken not to over tighten it but still keeping it firmly in place.
Step 3
After doing the above, turn on your pool equipment to try it out. During the testing process, you can adjust the aerator to your desired level. For best results, keep your aerator running as much as possible. For more queries, ask your pool installation professional.

Although people have theorized that plants benefit from soothing music, there is some pretty interesting scientific evidence that shows that there may really be some substance to the concept. In addition to this scientific data, another controlled study also offers insight into how plants react to different types of music and why this might be a worthwhile pursuit. The use of music may even make it possible to eliminate the use of chemical weed killers and fertilizers in home gardens.

Joel Sternheimer
Andy Coghlan first disclosed the science regarding the impact of sound on plant growth in a 1994 article in New Scientist. His subject was French physicist and musician Joel Sternheimer, who made a discovery that plants grew better because of musical sequences he wrote. Sternheimer then applied for a patent to protect his concept.
Sternheimer’s melodies were carefully constructed, with each note corresponding to an amino acid in a protein, and the entire sequence corresponded to the entire protein. When plants heard the appropriate tunes, they produced more of the desired protein. But Sternheimer went a step further: he also composed tunes to inhibit protein synthesis. By doing this, he was able to inhibit the growth of undesirable plants like weeds.
Dorothy Retallack
Dorothy Retallack published a book entitled The Sound of Music and Plants in 1973. Her book discussed the experiments she performed with plants at Colorado Women’s College, in which she used three Biotronic Control Chambers. Retallack conducted several experiments; for the one described in her book, she used two chambers and placed identical plants and radios in each chamber. One chamber’s radio was set to a local rock music station while the other chamber’s radio played more soothing music.
By the end of two weeks, plants that heard soothing music were lush, green and equal in size. Their stems leaned 15 to 20 degrees towards the radio. Plants that heard rock music were tall and spindly, they drooped, their blooms had faded, and they leaned away from the radio. Two days later, almost all of the plants that were subjected to rock music were dead, but those that listened to soothing music were growing magnificently, and every plant was alive.
Benefits of Music to Plants
There are several ways by which plants can benefit from both positive and unsavory music:
• One way to use unpleasant music to your benefit is by playing it to kill weeds. This will only work if the weeds aren’t growing close to the area where your beloved plants are.
• By playing positive music for plants, you may be able to eliminate the need to use chemical fertilizers.
• Music can be used anywhere in the world, regardless of climate or terrain.
• Playing music for vegetable and edible crops can increase the size and flavor of these foods, as it did in some of Sternheimer’s experiments with tomatoes.
• Sternheimer also used note sequences to inhibit enzymes of the tomato mosaic virus to stop the virus from killing his plants.
How to Use Music to Benefit Plant Growth
• For specific plants, Niles Audio offers speaker pots, or speakers that look like a windowbox, that can fit well into your garden or patio décor.
• For larger areas, consider placing waterproof rock loudspeakers throughout the backyard. This is great for times when you’re entertaining or out working in the yard because you can also enjoy the music.
• Place rock speakers in places where you want to get rid of invasive plants, provided there aren’t desirable plants in the same area.
• Bring a portable all-weather radio outside and turn it to a station with soothing music.
• Open your windows and allow your plants to hear music from within the house.
Sternheimer and Retallack were able to prove that there is a correlation between soothing music and thriving vegetation. Playing music for plants in the garden while working outside may also reduce stress and help you be more productive in their outdoor chores, making this a win-win situation for you and your garden. So what are you waiting for? Crank it up!

Many people have heaps of junk piled up in the corners of their houses, in cupboards, drawers, under the bed and some more places. This junk material mostly comprises of clothes, furniture, books, magazine and many other things that are difficult to place suitably. If you look at these things carefully, you will see many useful items that you can still utilize or give to someone else who needs them.

The best way is to first collect all the supposed junk in one place. Now, collect all clothes and garments in one bag and other items of the same category in individual bags. Doing so will let you get rid of them easily. Sometimes it can be very panicking for you to manage the junk you have collected over the years. While classifying items, just check if there?s something that you would need again or make something useful out of it. The rest of the things can be donated or sold.
If you think some things are better discarded, do it, but never throw away books. You can donate them to a library or an old house, for they will surely be better utilized than anywhere else. You also have the option to sell some classic books at garage sales held over the weekend for great prices. This way you will be able to get rid of them and generate some easy cash as well.
Also, a lot of junk items can be reused by your children, for example, your expensive clothing, shoes, jackets, etc. Do not give them away to anyone right away since old is gold! If your children are not interested, reuse them yourself. If you still want to give it away, ensure that the person who receives them would use them appropriately.
On the other hand, just like you can sell books, you can also sell your expensive clothing and classic jewelry pieces, ornaments, brooches, wall pieces, decorative items, etc over a website or even at a garage sale.
The left over items should be carefully kept in box cartons until you find suitable people to give them to. A lot of things that we wish to discard today can be really worthy after some years, for example, old watches from high-end brands, sunglasses, time-pieces etc. These things make their way back after long times and are then resold at shops at even greater prices. You keep such items safely so you can utilize them at appropriate times.
Many times what we think is junk is actually not and can be utilized very efficiently with a little care. This also can save you from throwing away a lot of worthy items just because you did not feel like using them at some point in your life.
Andrew has been working in the removal and storage industry specialising in interstate removals and office moves. As part of his daily job, he has learnt how to deal with junk.
