how to treat varicocele symptoms

Monday, August 30th, 2010 |

There are a number of treatments avaiable to treat a varicocele. Treatment depends on symptoms and seriousness of the condition.

Treatment in Cases with No Symptoms or Mild Symptoms
A scrotal support or supportive underwear may be the only treatment required.

Varicocele Ligation
Surgery is recommended for men with a varcocele where pain, damage to the testicles, atrophy or where treatment is required for sterility. The procedure is surgical ligation (tying off) of the distended veins. This can be carried out under a general or local anesthestic. Keyhole surgery is sometimes available and results in a smaller scar. Surgery takes about 45 minutes and is performed as day surgery.

About two weeks away from work will be required but this depends on the type of work. A scrotal support will be required for some time after surgery.

Treatment Complications following Varicocele Ligation
Complications include infection, hematoma (blood clot formation), injury to the scrotal tissue or structures, injury to the artery that supplies the testicle. Re-emergence of the varicocele occurs in between 0.6 and 45% of cases

Embolization of the Varicocele
Performed under a local anesthetic, a small incision is made into the right side of the groin, through which a small wire is passed into the large vein in the leg. The wire is guided into the veins and drains the left scrotum. A small metal coil is placed in the vein to block it off, effectively doing the same job as surgical ligation. The procedure is usually on an out patient basis. The advantages of embolization include minimal risk of damage to the testicular artery so testicular atrophy is rare. There is a very small risk of developing a hydrocele.
Reocurrance of varicocele after this procedure is between 4% and 11%.

Complications of Embolization of Varicocele

  • Migration of the coil out of the vein
  • Allergic reactions to the x-ray contrast dye
  • Bleeding from the right groin where the wire is inserted
  • Returning to Fertility following Surgical Intervention for Varicocele
It takes about 90 days for a sufficient quantity of new sperm to be produced to permit fertilization.50% of men who have a varicocelectomy to correct infertility father children within a year. 5% to 20% who recieve treatment for varicocele have a recurrance of the condition.

A Heart Attack Shouldn’t Kill Your Sex Life

    Monday, May 24th, 2010 |

Surviving a heart attack can kill your sex life. But it doesn’t have to, and a new study shows doctors play a key role in whether it does. Patients were less likely to resume having sex if their doctors did not talk about when it was safe, the study found. Many heart attack survivors fear that a tryst could land them back in the hospital – or even in the graveyard. But the chance of that is extremely small, doctors say.

“People perceive it might kill them. And it’s not just the person with the heart attack, but also their partner,” said Dr. Stacy Tessler Lindau, a gynecologist and sexuality researcher at the University of Chicago. (more…)

Study: Shaken-Baby Cases Rose During the Recession | health

    Friday, May 7th, 2010 |

The stressful effects of a faltering economy, skyrocketing unemployment and precarious personal finances can be dire. People take up smoking or use alcohol to cope, they become depressed or suicidal, and they develop stress-related illnesses like heart disease. Now researchers report that the harm may be spreading to children too, when parents’ stress leads them to inadvertently injure their children.

Presenting May 1 at the Pediatric Academic Societies annual meeting in Vancouver, a team of researchers led by child-abuse expert Dr. Rachel Berger at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh reported a significant increase in cases of shaken-baby syndrome, in which youngsters are shaken violently by an adult, since the start of the current recession. Researchers analyzed data on 512 cases of head trauma in the children’s centers of four hospitals (in Pittsburgh, Pa.; Cincinnati, Ohio; Columbus, Ohio; and Seattle) and found that the number of cases had increased to 9.3 per month as of Dec. 1, 2007, compared with 6 per month prior to that date — a rate that had held steady since 2004.

The rise in shaken-baby cases correlates with the economic downturn associated with the recession. “This is a perfect storm in a bad way, where we have economic stressors that are causing the removal of social-service resources for preventing and addressing child abuse,” says Berger. Although she says she was not surprised by the association observed in her study, she calls the sheer rise in recent cases of abusive head injuries in children “striking.” (more…)

properties of nigella sativa | global healer

    Friday, April 16th, 2010 |

do you ever hear a medicine and suplement tha could heal any type of desease but death? nigella sativa is the answer, this medicine arrecommended by moslem prophet Muhammad SAW 1500 years ago and trugh modern medical test it has many benefit that could improve our body. you should consume it 1-2 capsules per day with very very low cost and you will soon got healthy.

The seeds of Nigella sativa Linn. (Ranunculaceae), commonly known as black seed or black cumin, are used in folk (herbal) medicine all over the world for the treatment and prevention of a number of diseases and conditions that include asthma, diarrhoea and dyslipidaemia. This article reviews the main reports of the pharmacological and toxicological properties of N. sativa and its constituents. The seeds contain both fixed and essential oils, proteins, alkaloids and saponin. Much of the biological activity of the seeds has been shown to be due to thymoquinone, the major component of the essential oil, but which is also present in the fi ed oil. The pharmacological actions of the crude extracts of the seeds (and some of its active constituents, e.g. volatile oil and thymoquinone) that have been reported include protection against nephrotoxicity and hepatotoxicity induced by either disease or chemicals. The seeds/oil have antiinflammatory, analgesic, antipyretic, antimicrobial and antineoplastic activity. The oil decreases blood pressure and increases respiration. Treatment of rats with the seed extract for up to 12 weeks has been reported to induce changes in the haemogram that include an increase in both the packed cell volume (PCV) and haemoglobin (Hb), and a decrease in plasma concentrations of cholesterol, triglycerides and glucose. The seeds are characterized by a very low degree of toxicity. Two cases of contact dermatitis in two individuals have been reported following topical use. Administration of either the seed extract or its oil has been shown not to induce significant adverse effects on liver or kidney functions. It would appear that the beneficial effects of the use of the seeds and thymoquinone might be related to their cytoprotective and antioxidant actions, and to their effect on some mediators of inflammation.

    Saturday, March 27th, 2010 |

Everywhere you turn in Indonesia there is evidence that society in general has lost touch with its roots. The pursuit of temporal wealth by the rich coupled with the pursuit of a living wage by the poor has devastated our environment. There is little recognition that our very survival depends on mutual and communal action.

The needs of the community at large are rarely, if ever, addressed. These have nothing to do with sectarian interests, be they along religious or political fault lines because myopic greed recognises no demarcation. Cities lack parks, those essential green lungs for our physical well-being whilst their replacements, air-conditioned malls, contribute to global warming, increased flooding, traffic woes and mental malaise. And there is no co-ordinated public transport system, at any level. The devastation of forests along the shores and in the hinterlands has resulted in increased slaughter from the elements. Mangroves no longer impede erosion or tsunamis and tropical forests no longer provide clean water or safe havens for protected species. Landslips and floods kill hundreds every year.

The plundering of irreplaceable natural resources puts communities at risk – think Freeport and Sidoarjo.

As Jakartass, I’ve commented on various issues, given links where appropriate and offered moral support. Other bloggers, such as Indcoup, Greenstump and Yosef Ardi, have occasionally touched on environmental issues. We all have a personal perspective on life here so it is rare that we’ve found an issue we can simultaneously blog. There is only so much an individual can do.

In my researches of various posts about the environment in Indonesia I have come to realise that there is a wealth of information, skills and wisdom on tap, but these taps need to be turned on.

Discussions with a number of online colleagues have shown that there is scope for collective consciousness raising. As regular contributors to hyperspace, aware of its power to network, we have registered the domain greenindonesia.net . This is intended to be a wiki-type blog, albeit with a WordPress template.

There are a number of issues which need to be addressed, such as:

    Transport
    Recycling
    Fair Trade
    Food Issues
    Urbanisation
    Eco Tourism
    Nuclear Power
    Marine ecology
    Rain Forest Action
    Parks and Playspaces …..

No one person or organisation can address all of these issues. For that reason, we invite interested individuals and organisations to co-ordinate and edit sections of this blog.

Posts could focus on issues, news, individuals or whatever seems to be relevant. It is our hope that in publishing the collective writings focussed on what we believe constitute a sane future for Indonesia, we may be able to encourage society to actually work towards that future.

    Spring Cleaning, From the Inside

    Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010 |

In many parts of the world, you can almost sense the change. Places long gripped in the cold clutches of winter are gradually inching out from beneath snow and ice towards that much anticipated season, spring. In many cultures, spring is a time for renewal. Gardens and fields are planted. The term “spring cleaning” conjures up, for most of us, pictures of a house-maker working feverishly to render their dwelling spotless. Cleaning during the spring dates back for centuries, and recently another old-fashioned type of “spring-cleaning” has caught the interest of many. I am talking about colon cleansing and detoxification.

The colon is an involuntary muscle that moves fecal matter from the fecal pouch, where it is deposited after the body determines it has no usable material in it. Through a slow, involuntary process, the matter is moved along several feet of colon until it emerges from the body through the anal sphincter. Over the course of a year, many people, especially those with sluggish digestive tracts, can accumulate fecal matter in the folds of the accordion-like colon, some of which dry and harden, becoming impacted. Many practitioners of holistic medicine also believe that some toxic materials can be stored in this “immovable’ fecal material. They advocate, as has been done for many generations, a cleansing of the colon each spring.

Colon cleansings can be something as intense as a series of colon hydrotherapy sessions that work like a slow, steady enema to wash out waste. Though this sounds uncomfortable, the introduction of modern colon hydrotherapy instruments and specialized chairs for the process make it relatively discomfort-free. The cost can be a bit prohibitive, and you will need to look for a provider that is licensed or certified to perform this service, as it is not without risks.

A more popular method of colon cleansing is the kind you can wash down with a glass of water. Health food stores and vitamin shops carry many brands of colon cleansers, each with special ingredients to rid your body of excess fecal matter and the build up of purported toxins. Choosing one can be difficult. If a gradual cleansing of your colon, utilizing pills that are taken at home, sounds as if it would work better for you, then talk to someone knowledgeable about the different types. If you don’t have an Osteopath or holistic medical provider, ask the manager at your health food store. There are also on-line links that allow you to compare different brands and their effectiveness.

Does it help? Many practitioners of traditional medicine decry these treatments as useless, outdated and imply they are dangerous. While they might be unorthodox as far as contemporary medicine is concerned, they have a fairly long history of benefits that can be attested by large numbers of people.

Spring-cleaning the house helps get the home ready for a season of enjoying warm, outdoor weather. Spring-cleaning the inside of your body can help you be ready to enjoy it, as well.

Note: If you are suffering from a serious illness that involves your digestive tract, or some other complicated medical condition, please be sure to ask your doctor before undertaking a colon cleanse.

    garden design

    http://jrpcad.co.uk/images/Garden%20design%20pic.jpg

    Overview

What comes to mind when you think about a beautiful garden? Do you like wild growth with plenty of color or a formal design with clean lines? Designing a garden in your landscape that fits your personality and goals takes time and effort, but the process can be an enjoyable learning experience by following a few simple garden design rules.

    Identify Goals

The first thing to do when designing your garden is to identify goals. Do you want plenty of color or lots of evergreen plants? Do you want low maintenance perennials and native plants or plants that will provide seasonal color and be replaced each spring or fall? Maybe you want to attract butterflies and hummingbirds or grow vegetables. Also, consider the location of your garden. How much sun will it get during a typical day? Will it get more sun during the winter than summer? How far away is it from a water source? Do you want to create a privacy screen or a focal point? These are questions to address in order to design your garden effectively.

    Choose Plants

Research and identify different plants that will help meet your goals. Be sure they will grow in your designated USDA horticultural zone. You can find your zone on the widely used USDA horticultural zone map (see Resource below) that designates geographical areas where the climate is warm enough for a certain plant to thrive. Take note of the eventual size of desired plants and any toxicity or thorny growth if children will be present.

    Draw Garden Plan

Use graph or plain paper and draw your garden plan from an aerial point of view, sketching in all permanent structures and plants such as trees or large shrubs that will be part of the design. Flower beds with soft flowing lines are more pleasing to the eye and easier to mow around than those with sharp angles. Use a water hose or rope to lay out a potential flower bed so you can get an idea of how it will look. Beds wider than two feet will require you to enter the bed for maintenance, although wider beds have more impact in the landscape. Leave room for lawnmowers and wheelbarrows, and leave room for kids and pets to play. Tall plants go in the back of the garden and shorter plants up front. A garden people will view from all sides has taller plants in the middle.

    Color

When adding color to the garden, most experts agree that colors on the opposite side of the color wheel look best together, such as orange and blue. Masses of one color or the same shades of color have more impact than a variety of color in one place. Warm colors such as red and yellow make a bold statement and blues and greens are more subdued and relaxing. Repeat the same colors here and there around the garden to create cohesion.

    Texture and Transition

Different plants create different textures. For example, a cactus has quite a different texture than a bed of snapdragons. Vary the texture within the garden to create interest. Choose plants and designs that create a smooth transition between flowerbeds or points of interest. For example, add plants of medium height between short and tall plants or tall structures.

    Scale and Balance

Planting something that will grow big and overwhelm everything will upset the scale and balance of your garden design. Choose plants that work together with other plants without overwhelming them. Also, when thinking about balance, split the design in half to see if the two sides cover about the same space and will create balance when the garden design is mature.

what is varicocele and how to treat it

    Thursday, December 10th, 2009 |

You’ve heard of varicose veins — those swollen veins that sometimes show up in the legs. You’ve probably heard your grandma and her old lady friends talking about their varicose veins and never thought twice about them.

    http://www.healthcentral.com/common/images/1/19472_12180_5.jpg

But hopefully you’ve never heard your grandma mention a varicocele, which is also a swelling of the veins. A varicocele happens just to guys, and you probably won’t sit around and talk about it with your pals. That’s because it occurs not in the legs but in a place a bit more private and a lot more tender — the scrotum. It’s generally harmless and basically the same kind of thing as varicose veins in the legs. But what exactly is a varicocele and how do you get rid of it?

    What Is a Varicocele?
In all guys, there’s a structure that contains arteries, veins, nerves, and tubes — called the spermatic cord — that provides a connection and circulates blood to and from the testicles. Veins carry the blood flowing from the body back toward the heart, and a bunch of valves in the veins keep the blood flowing one way and stop it from flowing backward. In other words, the valves regulate your blood flow and make sure everything is flowing in the right direction.

But sometimes these valves can fail. When this happens, some of the blood can flow in reverse. This backed-up blood can collect in pools in the veins, which then causes the veins to stretch and get bigger, or become swollen. This is called a varicocele (pronounced: var-uh-ko-seel).

    Who Gets Them?
Although they don’t happen to every guy, varicoceles are fairly common. They appear in about 15% of guys between 15-25 years old, and they mostly occur during puberty. That’s because during puberty, the testicles grow rapidly and need more blood delivered to them. If the valves in the veins in the scrotum aren’t functioning quite as well as they should, the veins can’t handle transporting this extra blood from the testicles. So, although most of the blood continues to flow correctly, blood begins to back up, creating a varicocele.

An interesting fact is that varicoceles occur mostly on the left side of the scrotum. This is because a guy’s body is organized so that blood flow on that side of the scrotum is greater, so varicoceles happen more often in the left testicle than the right. Although it’s less common, they can sometimes occur on both sides.

What Are the Signs and Symptoms?
In most cases, guys have no symptoms at all. A guy might not even be aware that he has a varicocele. However, if there are symptoms, they tend to occur during hot weather, after heavy exercise, or when a guy has been standing or sitting for a long time. Signs include:
    •    a dull ache in the testicle(s)
    •    a feeling of heaviness or dragging in the scrotum
    •    dilated veins in the scrotum that can be felt (described as feeling like worms or spaghetti)
    •    discomfort in the testicle or on that particular side of the scrotum
    •    the testicle is smaller on the side where the dilated veins are (due to difference in blood flow)

    What Do Doctors Do?
It’s a good idea to get a testicular exam regularly, which is normally part of a guy’s regular checkup. In addition to visually checking for any unusual lumps or bumps, the doctor generally feels the testicles and the area around them to make sure a guy’s equipment is in good shape and there are no problems.

A testicular exam may be done while a guy is standing up so that the scrotum is relaxed. (Some abnormalities like a varicocele can be more easily felt in a standing position.) The doctor checks things like the size, weight, and position of the testicles, and gently rolls each testicle back and forth to feel for lumps or swelling. The doctor also feels for any signs of tenderness along the epididymis, the tube that transports sperm from the testicles.

The spermatic cord is also examined for any indication of swelling. If the doctor suspects a varicocele, he or she might confirm suspicions by using a stethoscope to hear the blood flowing backward through the faulty veins or might even use an ultrasound, which can identify malfunction of the veins and also measure blood flow.

    Do Varicoceles Cause Permanent Damage?
Although there is no way to prevent a varicocele, it usually needs no special treatment. A varicocele is usually harmless and more than likely won’t affect a guy’s ability to father a child. Some experts believe, though, that in some cases a varicocele might damage the testicle or decrease sperm production. In those cases, a doctor will probably recommend surgery.

What If the Doctor Finds a Varicocele?
Varicoceles are generally harmless, but if there is any pain and swelling the doctor may prescribe an anti-inflammatory medication to relieve it. If the varicocele is causing discomfort or aching, wearing snug underwear (like briefs) or a jock strap for support may bring relief. If pain is persistent and support doesn’t help, the doctor may recommend a varicocelectomy (a surgical procedure to remove the varicocele).

A varicocelectomy is done by a urologist (pronounced: yoo-rah-luh-jist), a doctor who specializes in urinary and genital problems. The procedure is usually done on an outpatient basis (meaning there’s no need for an overnight stay in hospital). The patient usually receives general or local anesthesia. Then, the doctor simply ties off the affected vein to redirect the flow of blood into other normal veins.

In some cases, instead of surgery, doctors can pass a plastic tube into the vein that’s causing the varicocele and treat the problem by causing a blockage in the blood flow to the enlarged vein. Talk with your doctor about whether this form of treatment might be an option for you.

After surgery, the doctor probably will recommend that a guy wears a scrotal support and places an ice pack on the area to bring down any swelling. There may be discomfort in the testicle for a few weeks, but after that, any aches and pains will go away and everything should be back in full working order.
