Treatment of Substance Abuse People
Treatment of addiction is a challenging one and has to be undertaken with great care and patience. Treatment of patients suffering with substance abuse is done on the basis of individual case. The severity of problem faced by each individual may differ. Alcohol and drug counseling is one of the traditional ways of treatment. Counselors help individuals to understand behaviors and problems related to their addiction. It is generally done on an individual basis, but it is also found in a group setting and also involves crisis counseling, weekly or daily counseling, and drop-in counseling supports. The counselors are trained to develop recovery programs to encourage healthy behaviors and also support by providing coping strategies in case of a risk situation. They also work hand in hand with the he family members who are also affected by the addiction of the individuals the counselors are treating.
Counseling is also associated with intervention, a process whereby the family seeks the help of specialists to get the individual treated. Interventions are either direct which is a confrontational meeting with the alcohol or other drug addicted person or indirect, which engages the family members of the addict and persuade them to contribute proactively in the treatment of the addicted individual.
The counseling process begins with first goals and that is of breaking down denial of the person with the addiction. Denial means unwillingness on the part of patients or fear to face the real nature of addiction and move towards a better life. After this step has been attained the professional coordinate with the family of the addict to bring the person facing the problem to drug rehabilitation immediately. The family members need to be really strong and determined so as to convince the involved person to go for drug rehabilitation or alcoholism treatment. Colleagues in the workplace can also play a positive role in the intervention process instead of family members. Sometimes employing a sober coach who works like a nanny is also used at the person needing addiction treatment’s home or workplace and tries to keep patient’s behavior under control.
A person fully benefits from treatment if he is able to stay at the rehabilitation center long enough. Encouraging patients to continue their treatment requires motivations not only from program members but also friends and family. A course of intensive treatment should be followed by a less intensive care and continue to take care in their recovery as before.
A major challenge facing the professionals involved in the treatment of people facing substance abuse is that of to get more patients under these rehabilitation programs. There is an immense treatment gap between those who need treatment and those who are actually provided treatment. In order to reduce the gap a wholehearted approach is required. Some strategies that may be used are improving access to effective treatment, increasing awareness among both patients and health care professionals about the importance of an addiction treatment, attaining insurance uniformity, reducing disgrace associated with it, and raising awareness among both patients and health care professionals of the value of addiction treatment. Such an approach will go a long way in the success of alcohol and drug counseling.
