Sydney Silly Season Survival Guide
If you’re bracing for yet another silly season in Sydney (although so far this one has been more of a chilly season than a silly season!) then there are few things you should know to weather the storm. Firstly, though the flowers are out and the sun is shining, it’s not all carefree fun—the silly season can have a big impact on your finances and your well being, so it’s important to employ a few tricks and tips, especially in a city like Sydney that never sleeps!
Most people experience a ‘silly season’ around December/January, but in Sydney—be it the fine weather, beautiful beaches or sheer number of people bumping around the place—the silly season seems to stretch out much longer! So that you manage to have a great time without sending yourself bankrupt or dropping from exhaustion, here are a few hints to help you along the way!
- Pick and Choose
It is a truth universally acknowledged that no one can possibly attend all the functions they are invited to. From November to February, invitations start pouring in and whether it’s a Melbourne Cup function on the Harbour, an outdoor music festival with friends or your own (or your partner’s) work Christmas function, it can all get a little overwhelming!
The key is to acknowledge that it’s going to become frantic from the outset, and consider your RSVPs with the knowledge that you’ll quickly become booked up. It’s OK to say no—and indeed you have to occasionally—so you can afford to be a little bit picky about which events you agree to attend.
- Look After Your Health
No one is saying you’re going to over-indulge in the silly season but…well, let’s face it—most of us DO! While it can all seem like harmless fun at the time, the strain of constant late nights, alcohol, excessive food and entertaining can really leave us battered and bruised by the time the season has drawn to a close. Make sure you get enough sleep, stay hydrated and don’t go too crazy on the champagne at any end-of-year events!
Sydney is full of opportunities to indulge, from Sydney Harbour cruises with drinks included to private parties with everything provided. The trick is to enjoy yourself without doing too much damage to your body in the process, something that can take a bit of getting used to for first-timers!
- Don’t Get TOO Silly
Ah, the office Christmas party, the site of many a humiliation for unsuspecting employees who let their hair down a little too much. While it’s all well and good to celebrate another year gone by with colleagues, the office Christmas party can be a landmine of embarrassments for those who over-indulge. To make sure you avoid any sticky situations and maintain that professional edge, try to keep things at least a little tame. In other words, no Bridget Jones karaoke moments, please!
There certainly isn’t anywhere like Sydney, and if you’re looking for fun, you’re in the right place. Surviving Sydney’s silly season (say that once you’ve had a few cocktails) is simply a matter of restraint and common sense. And hey, if you don’t manage to use either of these, well—there’s always next year!
