Wakebording is a great way to experience the water and get the adrenaline pumping. Here, we’ve listed some important tips for first time wakeboarders. From how to choose from a number of wakeboards when you’re starting out to the important safety precautions you should be taking, we’ve got the important tips you don’t want to miss:

Life Jackets are a must

Always make sure that you are wearing an appropriate floatation device when wakeboarding. This is the first thing you should think of before anything else.

Always make sure there is a spotter

A spotter is a person who keeps a look out for objects in the water and lets the driver of the boat know how you are travelling.

Rope length

Beginner wakeboarders should always use a shorter rope. This makes it easier for them to get out of the water. Anywhere from 30-50 feet is a good length.

The correct speed

Wakeboarding requires less speed than many other water sports. Sometimes the driver of the boat may forget this. Make sure you remind them that it takes less speed. Especially because you are new to the sport, extra speed may make things more difficult.

Gradual speed build up

Remember, it’s gradual speed build up that is best for helping to maintain your position. Don’t rush the speed increase; go at your own pace.

Know when to stand

Until you are completely out of the water keep your arms and knees tucked in and stand in a crouching position. When you are standing up, most of your weight should be on your front foot.

Tow handle position

The rope handle should be held low, parallel to the water, this is simply because it is easier to stay upright with the rope in this position.

Choosing the right wakeboard

Similar to if you were purchasing water skis or a surfboard; you need to consider your skill level when purchasing your first wakeboard. In general, beginners prefer a board with squared edges. For someone who has little experience with the sport and is not likely to be doing big air tricks in the near future a board like this allows for ultimate stability and control.

Stick at it

Like any sport, wakeboarding isn’t easy. If you have trouble at first, keep trying. Remember, practice makes perfect!

Let someone guide you

Always make sure that you have someone who you trust to guide you when you are just starting out. You want to get it right from the very beginning and the best way to learn the correct techniques is to get the assistance of someone who knows all about the sport.

Wakeboarding is a great water sport. I hope our list of tips has given you some helpful advice on how you can get yourself wakeboarding in no time, by simply following as few easy steps.
