To improve your personal safety install security screens and security doors in your home, always be aware of what is going on around you and even learn basic self defence.

Often in the news we hear and read about attacks on women, and even men, when they are out in public and even in their own homes.  Being able to improve your own personal safety is something that we should all consider.  Even modifying our homes to make them more secure is a good idea.  For example, you can install things like alarms or put in security doors and security screens.  As well as protecting your property and stopping thieves or vandals, you are also putting in protection for yourself and your family.

Security screens and doors

Improving the safety of your home is a good step towards improving your own personal safety.  Security screens protect your windows from damage and deter thieves and attackers from breaking in.  Security doors are great to have because if someone knocks on your front door you can answer the door without having to unlock the security door and put yourself at a potential risk.  You can see through the door, with usually the person on the outside being unable to see in, and yet you can still talk to the person.

Be aware of your surroundings

You can help protect yourself by simply being aware of what is going on around you.  When you go somewhere be wary of who is around you and what is going on.  Don’t let yourself get into difficult situations that you might not be able to get out of.  Don’t go with anyone that you have just met that you think is a bit unsafe.  Trust your instincts.  Generally if you feel it is unsafe it usually is.

Learn self defence

You can take active steps towards protecting yourself by learn basic self defence.  Hopefully you will never need these skills but if they time came when you did you would certainly be glad you had the ability to at least fight off an attacker.  You only need to be able to fight them off long enough to get away from them and get some help.

Watch out in car parks

Some car thieves actually target people while they are sitting in their cars in the car park.  They watch you walk to your car and then jump in once you have got in.  Don’t give them the opportunity.  Never get into the car and start doing things like balance your cheque book, make a phone call or put on make up, not unless you lock the door first.  Many unsuspecting people are car jacked this way, and some thieves don’t care if they harm the person or not.

Pepper spray and personal alarms

To protect yourself you can also carry pepper spray or a personal alarm, depending on what is available where you live.  This is particularly good for females who might not have the physical strength to fight off an attacker.  Many people’s lives have been saved through using these devices.  They fit easily into a handbag and don’t cost a fortune.
