5 Factors that Make a Promotional Bag Truly Eco-Friendly

Written on April 4, 2011 – 8:32 am | by daydaily.com |

Claiming that something is eco-friendly has turned into a common catch phrase. It seems that there is an eco-friendly element to everything these days. If you are looking for truly environmentally friendly promotional bags, here are a number of issues you need to think of. Sometimes you might find that a bag is not what it seems.

  • Material. If a re-usable bag is made of synthetic materials, it might be better for the environment than throw-away plastic bags, but it is hard to say the item is really environmentally friendly. The processes that go into to making synthetic materials are just as harmful to the environment as the production of plastic bags. The same kind of residual material either needs to be re-used, or it will stay on the earth for thousands of years. The only acceptable option is for natural materials which are produced in a manner that does not use many resources. Hemp, for example, is a perfect ‘weed’ that grows fast and uses little water.
  • Distance. If your green bag was produced on the other side of the planet, then obviously it was shipped to where you are. If that means your bag has traveled over 10,000 kilometers to get to you, perhaps you need to consider if it is truly environmentally friendly. The most environmentally friendly bags are those which are made with sustainable materials, in a sustainable fashion, in your local region, at least in your country. By buying products made in your own country, you are also helping your national economy.
  • Design. If you bag has been designed well, it will prove to be very functional. Pockets can make a bag more usable than others. Size will really count. It is important to analyse why you are giving bags to your customers, and how they will use them. If you are a sports related business, a bigger bag may be of more use than a smaller bag that women like to use for their cosmetics.
  • Lifecycle. How long will your bag last? If they are designed well and made well, your single bag can eliminate thousands of plastic bags of a lifetime. If your bag is only used a couple of times and falls apart, you could hardly call in environmentally friendly. The aim of a good bag is to be used for many years, and this requires it to be made strong and sturdy. Quality will cost a little more.
  • Education. This is one area that many companies neglect when they are distributing an eco-friendly bag. You should let your customers know the attention to detail and all  the considerations you have put into choosing the bag for them. The greater the communication of your understanding, and your wish for your customers to use your green bags in a particular way, will have two distinct influences. Firstly, your customer will appreciate the effort you have put into the bag. They will appreciate the quality. This means they will have a better opinion of your business and brand. Secondly, because of your education, they are more likely to use the bag than before. It makes good sense in both terms of marketing and the environment.
