Nasty Situations To Be Aware Of When You Are Travelling
You bought travel insurance and that will cover you for a lot of situations. The reality being, Australian is that we are all a little naive, and we can fall into dangerous situations in other countries. This article is to warn you about some of the things that go on in many places. Read these situations and instead of cancelling your trip, or feeling paranoid, keep your eyes open and your wits about you. We live in a dangerous world, and there is a reason why Australia is very popular. It is a safe and fair country, and you might not be fully aware of that.
Tricked In To Drug Trafficking. Yes, this does happen. You hear of stories where people are caught in airports around the world or when re-entering Australia. Being tricked into drug trafficking is a very real and dangerous situation. You might be carrying what looks like an innocent item, or using a suitcase that was a gift from someone, and these items are loaded with concealed drugs. Be wary of gifts, carrying something for someone, and using someone’s luggage, whether it is a gift or not. Especially if they are going to contact you, or asking you to give someone something, at your destination. Avoid these situations where possible. Drug smugglers have very sophisticated techniques and you might have no idea what is really going on. Always pack your own luggage and make sure you seal it yourself with a lock.
Spiked Drinks. This is a very real danger. When you go out you should avoid leaving your drink unattended, or even taking drinks from someone else. Even worse if the staff are involved in this activity. Tourists are always a target. We all look like tourists no matter what we do. I have even had little children come up to me in the oddest of places knowing that I am a foreigner without a word being spoken. You look like a tourist, and therefore, you are a target. Spiking drinks is a nasty way to get you out of control and rob or do even worse things to you later. You need to be careful, and one suggestion is to drink bottled beer only, and make sure you keep your eyes on it when it is opened.
Kidnapping. This is a very real concern in many countries, and many kidnappers will get away with this. Your friends and family back home will be willing to do anything to get you back. Australia is not always the most proactive country when it comes to rescuing its own people. You need to remember that. In big situations there will be assistance, but in the case of kidnapping, don’t think they will send in the forces. You need to know which countries and which areas it happens in, and be very careful of where you are at all times.
Fraud – Overcharging Your Card. Using your credit card will really open you up to fraud. Many establishments are actually party to this. They will over-charge your card many more times than it was used especially were there are the old machines and not the electronic modern tools.
Fraud – Stealing Your Identity. This is a huge factor for any traveller. There are many times that you will be handing over a lot of your information. More often than not your passport is always on you, and a requirement in many countries, and therefore you are a real target. A laptop or small bag that contains all your details and enough for stealing your identity, and using that for travel or more fraud, is a real concern.
Being Set Up. This is a nasty situation that happens in many countries around the world. You may be convinced that you have done something wrong by police, or even get into a situation with locals, and the police will tell you that you are in the wrong. This usually leads to you having to pay your way out of a situation where you were not wrong in the first place. This is very real and happens all the time.
Overcharging. Over charging happens in so many places in the world. From doctors, to taxis, to restaurants. Some restaurants will even have separate menus for locals and tourists. You should avoid places that do not have menus on the wall, or prices on their menu. Always use accredited money changers and accredited taxis where possible. Get as much information about the local situation to be proactive in the first place.
Getting good cheap travel insurance that is value for money is only one arm of your self defence when travelling. There are a lot of things that you need to think about. These are only some of the common scams. There are many more.
