Senior citizens are living longer than ever before but unfortunately a longer life doesn’t mean a happier one. Because of the advances of medical science our bodies are living longer than ever before in the history of the world but our brains are not keeping up. More and more senior citizens are becoming victims of dementia.
Alzheimer’s disease, just one form of dementia, robs the victim of their independence, memories and eventually themselves. The good news is that there are many ways that you can prevent or delay the onset of dementia. The most reliable is also the most affordable; physical activity.
By engaging in regular physical activity you can improve your balance. Good balance is critical if you want to avoid fall related accidents which can cause brain damage, leading to cognitive impairment. Many falls come from weakened muscles and bones, two things that exercise can help strengthen. When you engage in rigorous exercise you build muscle mass, improve your stamina and energy level and increase your bone density.
The biggest contribution that exercise makes brain health isn’t improve cardiovascular system. When your heart is more efficient in your lungs work better they can feed your brain better. Just 30 minutes of rigorous walking every other day can have a tremendous impact on your long term health.
Now, before you start any kind of physical fitness program you should always check with your doctor. This is especially true for senior citizens or any individual who has been inactive over a long period of time. Assuming that you get the go-ahead from your physician, here’s how you can start getting physical;
Walk. Lace up those sneakers and hit the streets. Find a buddy to walk with you to keep your interest up and to make it safer. You should never walk at night when the chances of being hit by a car we’re getting mugged increase.
Stretch. Sign-up for a yoga class or by a stretching video that you can follow along with at home. Stretching is fantastic. It will help you improve your flexibility and reduce the chances of serious injury should you fall.
Get physical. Sitting around watching TV and reading may be entertaining but they do very little for your long-term health. Take up some fun and exciting activities that will get you out of the house and introduce you to new people and experiences while giving you some physical benefits as well. Gardening, dancing, golf, hiking and bicycling are great ways for you to have more fun and get healthier too.

Nairobi boasts Kenya’s very first national park, the Nairobi National Park, which was established in 1945 and offers an impressive range of animals and scenic areas of wild bush and a large expanse of plains. If you’ve never had a security system before, and don’t really speak the language, it’s a good idea to take the time to learn the fundamentals of security systems so you understand the procedures and processes involved. Whether you need home security monitoring or for your business, the more you know about security systems the easier it will be to make decisions.
1. Security industry terminology
Like most highly skilled professions the security industry has its own jargon, including a lot of terms that don’t make a lot of sense when you first hear them.
You’ll be aware of some of these terms, but probably only a few:
- Access points – Areas in the building which could provide access to intruders.
- Armed – An alarm system which is turned on and ready to respond.
- CCTV – Closed-Circuit Television cameras which provide real time visual surveillance of a security area.
- Dome network camera – A 360 degree camera with all-round vision which is part of a video surveillance network.
- Local alarms – An alarm system not hooked up to a remote monitoring system, usually with a loud sonic alarm.
- Monitored alarms – An alarm system or systems which are directly linked to a remote monitoring system operated by the security service provider.
- Nominated person – The client or a delegated employee of a client like a commercial business, used as a contact during an alarm situation.
- Notifications – Notifications made by the security service provider to clients and in some cases to the police.
- Panic/hold up alarm – A silent alarm operated by people on the premises to notify security service providers of an incident.
- Patrol – A physical inspection service performed by security service providers to inspect premises and in some cases check alarms when triggered.
2. What security service providers can and can’t do
Security service providers work in a regulated industry. These are licensed professional services which must operate in accordance with law.
Security service providers can:
- Provide services entered into under contract.
- Provide professional advice regarding security systems and other relevant matters.
- Access premises in the course of providing their services.
- Provide information to the police as required under the terms of their contracts.
- Notified authorized people of matters relevant to performance of their duties.
Security service providers can not:
- Act as law enforcement officers.
- Take any action which might put people at risk.
- Use weapons, except in self defence.
- Provide legal advice.
- Provide information to third parties regarding client security or otherwise breach client confidentiality.
3. How to get help with your security
The primary role of security service providers is to ensure a rapid response to security issues and incidents. As a matter of fact, much of the work of security service providers is done by remote security alarm monitoring, off-site.
Security service providers save time, money and in some cases lives, by providing an efficient, effective service which ensures the correct response to any security situation as soon as possible. It’s a very good idea to seek a consultation with the security service provider to take you through all the security issues related to your premises and give you a range of options to meet your needs.

The commercial residential development market has never been more competitive. Although this is widely seen as a “seller’s market”, few developers would need to be told that the buyers are looking for quality. High prices are making buyers much more demanding, and every selling point is valuable. Interestingly, one of the simpler, but more effective selling points is modern security. Combined with upmarket designs, stylish security screen doors and windows are seen as value for buyers.
1. The market issues
Not surprisingly, as the brilliant new townhouses and apartments are coming on the market, a sort of “arms race” of design features is happening among developers and their architects. Interior and exterior features are primary selling points. These new buildings also bring with them a lot of buyer expectations, and in the modern environment, security ranks high, particularly among upmarket buyers.
There’s another factor that’s less obvious- Security features are usually an “add-on” in most residences. Quite a lot of money has to be spent installing and maintaining security windows and doors. The new generation of home buyers is nothing if not money –conscious. Homes with up to the minute security features are seen as far better value, equivalent to “nothing to spend”. Commercially, the security features are a major plus. (more…)

KOMPAS.com – Lady Gaga has caused a stir at the Grammy Awards before she has even stepped on stage. The pop star, known for her outlandish fashion, has arrived on the red carpet ensconced in an egg.

Kelly Osbourne tweeted her arrival, saying “You will not believe your eyes when you see how @ladygaga showed up at the Grammys.”
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Lady Gaga conducted a red carpet interview with Ryan Seacrest from inside the egg.
Lady Gaga is nominated for the Album of the Year award. On Friday she released the first single from her new album Born This Way.
Aretha celebrated as Grammys begin
A recovering Aretha Franklin made her first televised appearance before a national audience as the Grammys began with a multi-genre tribute to the Queen of Soul, who is recovering from surgery.
Dressed in white, a healthy looking Franklin – who has yet to disclose what was ailing her – thanked well-wishers for their prayers and cards during her hospitalisation.
“I wish that I could have been with you all tonight, but since I couldn’t, next year,” she said.
The Recording Academy tapped some of music’s best powerhouse vocalists for the tribute, with Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Hudson, Martina McBride, best new artist nominee Florence Welch of Florence + the Machine, and gospel singer Yolanda Adams belting through some of Franklin’s greatest hits.
Lady Gaga an early winner
Lady Gaga won the first award of the day as the Grammys pre-telecast ceremony began in the afternoon.
Rihanna the Black Keys and Keith Urban were among the other early winners, with awards given out in a ceremony before the prime-time telecast.
Rihanna beat out Lady Gaga for best dance recording with Only Girl (In The World).
Empire State of Mind, by Jay-Z and Alicia Keys, won two early awards – best rap collaboration and best rap song. Eminem won best rap solo performance for Not Afraid.
The Black Keys won for best alternative album for Brothers, beating Vampire Weekend and Arcade Fire.
Australia’s Keith Urban won the fourth Grammy of his career, beating Toby Keith, Jamey Johnson, David Nail and Chris Young for best male country vocal performance.
The pre-televised ceremony is where the bulk of the Recording Academy’s 109 awards are doled out. The show is only broadcast online and top nominees usually don’t attend.
The live telecast will feature the top nominees, such as record of the year. Lady Antebellum’s Need You Now is nominated in both the song and the record of the year categories.
Other nominees for record of the year include Jay-Z’s Empire State of Mind, the New York native’s anthem for his city featuring Alicia Keys, and rapper B.o.B’s Nothin’ On You, with a melodious hook courtesy of Bruno Mars.
