A Heart Attack Shouldn’t Kill Your Sex Life

Monday, May 24th, 2010

Surviving a heart attack can kill your sex life. But it doesn’t have to, and a new study shows doctors play a key role in whether it does. Patients were less likely to resume having sex if their doctors did not talk about when it was safe, the study found. Many heart attack survivors fear that a tryst could land them back in the hospital – or even in the graveyard. But the chance of that is extremely small, doctors say.

“People perceive it might kill them. And it’s not just the person with the heart attack, but also their partner,” said Dr. Stacy Tessler Lindau, a gynecologist and sexuality researcher at the University of Chicago. (more…)

travel to west nusa tenggara | indonesia

Monday, May 24th, 2010

The Wallace Line, named after 19th century naturalist, Alfred Russell Wallace, marks a point of transition between the flora and fauna of Western and Eastern Indonesia and acts as the Western boundary of West Nusa Tenggara, which includes Lombok Island and Sumbawa. Lombok is noticeably different to its close neighbor, Bali. The northern part of the island is mountainous and lush with tall trees and shrubs. The South on the other hand is arid and covered by savannas.

Large Asian mammals are absents and replaced instead by large numbers of marsupials, lizards, cockatoos and parrots. The difference becomes more pronounced as one moves further east where dry seasons are more prolonged and the land is dry and bush-like, and so in many areas corn and sago are the staple food, instead of rice.

kingdom of heaven | movie reviews

Sunday, May 23rd, 2010

Well I’m a huge Ridley Scott fan, I am a sucker for period pieces and to say I love Gladiador isn’t enough. Like Crowe’s Maximus, Balian is reeling from the untimely death of his wife. But revenge is not Balian’s calling. As it turns out, she committed suicide, so she’s eternally damned according to the village priest. Afterwards he is told by Godfrey of Ibelin that he is his bastard son and offers him to come to the Crusades to fight. And I can bet that you already know the rest so I won’t continue to the story but to the movie in itself.

What worked in this film were obviously the cinematography, costumes and landscapes. Ridley definitely knows how to make a movie look good. Even if Ridley changed Hans Zimmer for Gregson-Williams in this movie, the music was great. And the best thing is that you don’t even notice that there were any special effects… it all looks very real. The battles were cool, and some of it was new and at least I had never seen anything like it in a movie. Another thing I liked was the message of the story, it seemed very balanced, and criticized the hypocrites and religion fanatics. (more…)

history of rolex watch

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

Rolex Watch Company was founded by Hans Wilsdorf.  Wilsdorf was was born  on March 22, 1881 in Kulmbach, Franconia  (Germany).  Wilsdorf’s parents died in 1893 and was placed in a boarding school by his uncle.  He was a businessman with an eye for opportunity.  In his late teens  early 20′s he followed his interests in business, travel, and the new “bracelet watch” and in 1900 he landed himself an apprenticeship in a watch exporting firm located in La Chaux De Fonds, watchmaking “mecca” of the world.

At 24, eager to do things differently, Wilsdorf decided to set-up his own watch-making business. He worked between London and La Chaux-de-Fonds.  Interestingly, Wilsdorf never claimed to be a watchmaker; until his dying day he signed all legal documents with the title “Merchant”!.

Lamborghini Reventon Review | Boys Toys

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

Despite the fact that he died 20 years before Lamborghini was even founded, without Felix Guzman the car you are looking at would certainly not have been called Reventón. At the time of his untimely demise in 1943, Senor Guzman was a renowned bullfighter. Unfortunately he went into the ring one day feeling a little under par. The result was that he met his grisly end on the horns and under the hooves of a bull that failed to read the script. In bullfighting circles, the beast became a legend. Its name was Reventón.

I had to try quite hard not to think of that Reventón as I kept my exclusive appointment with this one. It is the most extreme, exotic and rare road car ever made by Lamborghini and, as a company with one of the greatest reputations in the world for making extreme, exotic and rare cars, that is indeed saying something. Just 21 will be built – the prototype I am to drive and 20 production cars, all of which have been offered to favoured Lamborghini collectors for a cool €1m before local taxes. At current rates, that works out at around £840,000 a pop. All, of course, were sold even before any of the owners’ probably rather well-padded backsides slid past the up-flipped scissor doors and down into the slim alcantara-lined seats. (more…)

white peacock | the rare animal

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

Albinism is due to various gene mutations that affect the production of normal pigmentation. True (amelanistic) albinos lack melanin and are white with no markings and with unpigmented pink eyes. Partial (blue-eyed) albinos have some residual pigmentation. There are various degrees of patchy albinism (piebaldism) due to localised mutations in skin cells. Temperature dependent albinos have residual colour on cooler parts of the body i.e. Siamese cats where pigment develops on the head, tail and legs, but not on the warmer parts of the body.

how to make your own knife | the primitive ways of life

Sunday, May 16th, 2010

The shade tree auto mechanic was a good ol’ boy with a box full of old tools who rejuvenated beat up cars with a minimum of fuss. I’m trying to take the same approach to knife making. I’d like to tell you how to transform a piece of appropriately chosen scrap steel into an excellent cutting tool without using a lot of expensive power tools. Even if you never use this information to make your own knife, I hope that it will give you a greater awareness of what constitutes a good knife.

Staying Sharp
The ability of a knife to maintain a sharp edge after extensive use is a very valuable characteristic. I grit my teeth when I read or hear “Don’t make the steel too hard because then it will be difficult to sharpen.” What nonsense! Yes, there is a tradeoff between edge holding ability (hardness) and toughness but once you use a knife which stays sharp you will never want to use anything else.” (more…)
