hmt pilot, an hindustan military watches | army watch

Written on May 31, 2010 – 11:25 am | by daydaily.com |

I was just hunting antiques in the flea market, and was lucky to find a military watch made in india, hmt pilot. after all this time learning about the horology and about classic watch, just this once I find military watches branded hmt. is there anyone know more detail about this watch? I’ve been googling through the internet and found only little information about this watch, when this hmt pilot watch made? and what is the price? for your information, this watch had manual winding movements, so it doesn’t need any batteries.

These were originally made for the military by HMT. This was because before liberalization HMT was one of the few state owned watch companies in India which had a large market share in the watch market. HMT has now shut down its factry where these watches were made and it is extremely hard to get a new one of these leave alone a second hand one. Maybe not worth much right now but i anticepate it will gather steam in the future. BTW seiko gave the technology for the movement for the original Pilot and Janata

    HMT http://www.hmtindia.com/index.htm#%C2%A0
Pilot was only manufactured in the Srinagar watch factory. Srinagar is part of Kashmir, now terror stricken because of the Indian history. The factory still exists and all the employees some thousand of them get their monthly salary. However, on one comes to work at the factory because it is closed.
I got chatting with an experienced HMT salesman at a shop in Calcutta, India, few months back. A week back I went to the shop to buy a braille watch, guess only HMT manufactures them to find the shop closed!
Dear SK if you get pilot at Rs 595, it is a steal!

Though people think that the factory has shut down, HMT is still very much into the watch business. That they are not doing well is a different story. HMT showrooms still exist in all major cities. In Mumbai, one can find the showroom in Dadar (Kabutar khana) in the ground floor of K-Lounge. Mind you, the timings are pretty odd. The showroom is open only till 6PM in the evening on weekdays and 2:30PM on saturdays. All HMT classics like Janata, Sona, Pilot, Taurus, ADSL, NASL are available.

Source: I bought a Janata, Sona and Pilot this week :)
