This is a current model Navitimer with a very rare silver dial with silver subdail and arabics combination. What appealed to me first was the cool somewhat understated dial. It did not have the same black-and-white immediate presence that calls out “I am a Navitimer, look at me!” that many of them do.

Don’t get me wrong, however, as I love the way a classic black and white Navitimer looks. I have one of those too! This new layout of the Valjoux movement with the totalizers at 3, 6 and 9 is nice, and works well for this watch, creating a more symmetrical appearance.
This new Breitling Caliber 23 no longer has a quickset date like the previous Caliber 13-based Navitimers. I’m not sure why they were unable to carry that feature over. (more…)

It may be thin and light–even for a pocket camcorder–but the ultraslim Toshiba Camileo S20 ($180 as of 5/7/2010) packs more features into its frame than any high-definition pocket camcorder we’ve tested to date.
Along with 1080p high-definition video, digital stabilization, and a macro/landscape toggle switch–all of which we’ve seen in models such as the Kodak Zi8–the Camileo S20 has a handful of pocket-camcorder firsts, including an LED light for shooting in the dark, a time-lapse mode that lets you select between three preset intervals, four white-balance presets, and a slow-motion mode that helps you take (very grainy) footage of fast action. It shoots AVI files in 1080p or 720p at 30 frames per second, recording the video footage to a user-supplied SD or SDHC card. (more…)

South Korea’s Asiana Airlines has been named the airline of the year at the annual World Airline Awards. Qantas lost another spot in the 2010 awards announced last night in Hamburg, Germany, dropping to seventh place down from sixth last year. In 2008, it was rated the world’s third best airline.

The annual awards by Skytrax are based on surveys with more than 17 million passengers, carried out over 10 months. Passengers rate airlines on customer service, comfort of seating, quality of food, lounges and cabin crew.

They were once the preserve of high-flying business executives for whom time was money. But now binmen are being given BlackBerry mobile phones to spy on householders putting out their rubbish. They will use them to take pictures of ‘health and safety problems’, such as overfilled bins, and to take photographic evidence of homeowners committing ‘environmental crimes’, such as putting general waste into recycling bins.

The BlackBerrys will be used to snoop on the binmen themselves. Rubbish collection bosses will use them to track the location of trucks, ensuring their binmen don’t take detours, such as visiting the pub, during work hours. The devices will be supplied to Biffa, one of the UK’s biggest rubbish collection companies, as part of a £1.75m deal with Vodafone.T he waste company, which runs the household rubbish collection service for 25 local authorities, will receive 3,100 devices, including phones, dongles and 3G data cards for 1,500 of its binmen. Apple is on track to become the number one smartphone maker in Australia this year, analysts say. Nokia has long dominated the smartphone market but in just three years since the iPhone launched, Apple has rocketed up the charts into the number two slot in Australia. Its growth rate far surpasses any other manufacturer, IDC telecommunications analyst Mark Novosel said.

Novosel is in the process of compiling smartphone sales figures for the first quarter of this year and while his final report has yet to be released, the preliminary figures are sure to cause consternation at Nokia.
“The iPhone is continuing to experience extremely strong demand in Australia, with 2009 shipments growing by more than 230 per cent year on year,” Novosel said.
