movie reviews

The American Film Market is in full swing at present, giving international buyers the opportunity to scope out the new movies for which they might like to fork over some of their copious wealth. And as part of the buyer-seduction process, many of the folks behind the available flicks have put out fresh stills of their projects, which in turn gives us little people a glimpse into the filmic future.

Mark Wahlberg

In addition to a full range of snapshots, Collider is also carrying extensive story information about many of these just-finished and not-quite-finished-yet movies, but here is just a wee small smattering of some of the more intriguing films to stick their heads above the AFM parapet (er, and Piranha 3D as well).

After his alleged dust-up with George Clooney on the set of Three Kings, and his hit YouTube critique of Lily Tomlin during the making of I Heart Huckabees, we can only guess as to what crazy antics director David O. Russell has been getting up to with stars Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale on The Fighter. Luckily, as the title suggests, the film is about boxing (specifically the life of pugilist ‘Irish’ Micky Ward, played by Wahlberg), so those boys have opportunity to work out all their aggression inside the ring.

George Clooney.

Following on from his acclaimed Ian Curtis biopic Control, Anton Corbijn has been working on The American, starring Clooney as a disillusioned assassin who agrees to take one last job in Italy. The provided picture shows a concerned-looking Clooney wielding his sniper rifle, striking a deft balance between sensitive new man and cold-blooded maniac.

Channing Tatum.

The Eagle of the Ninth appears an unusual movie for Kevin McDonald to follow up politico-thriller State of Play with, being based on a 1950s kids’ adventure book set in Roman-occupied Britain – though with six ensuing volumes, there is franchise potential aplenty. Channing Tatum stars as a Roman Centurion named Marcus Aquila, and indeed – if we temporarily put aside any semblance of common sense – why shouldn’t he?

John Cusack.

Shanghai is a thriller set in the eponymous city on the eve of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. John Cusack’s secret agent hits town to investigate the murder of his best pal, and finds himself involved with local spook Ken Watanabe and gangster’s wife Gong Li. Cusack’s 1408 director Mikael Håfstrom was the man tasked with shouting “Action!” and “Cut!”.

Still from Piranha 3D.

And finally, the one we’ve all been waiting for, Piranha 3D. Confusingly, this offering from Hills Have Eyes director Alexandre Aja is the fourth, rather than the third bearing the Piranha title, and is in fact a second remake of the 1978 Joe Dante-helmed first one. Is that clear? About as clear as a lake filled with the blood of some catalogue-model-cute bathers! More than three decades after Jaws, a cameoing Richard Dreyfuss dares to go back into the water.

Intrigued by your pointing to the volumes of Rosemary Sutcliff (author of The Eagle of the Ninth) as offering material for a franchise … just to note there is more about Rosemary Sutcliff at http://www.rosemarysutcliff.wordpress.com
